Chapter Four

Respond to the question below.
What is the name that Liberty has given to Equality? Does this name fit? Why?

Honors's Discussion Prompt
In this chapter, the interaction between Liberty and Equality is one demonstration of the author’s use of foreshadowing in the novel. Based on this interaction, what might the reader expect in the future action?

  1. Liberty gave Eqaulity the name "The Unconquered"(p.56). This name best describes Equality, for he always seems to go against the system of ethics. I find it a bit intruing that both Equality and Liberty have given each other different names in the story. I infer that both Equality and Liberty will work together to fight for their independence. The reason I believe this is due to the fact that both have strong curiosity in the lives. They are like counterparts of opposite genders.
Honors: I believe that Liberty and Equality will work together to gain freedom. The elements of this story have a resemblance to "Romeo and Juliet". They are both forbidden to see each other, yet they never follow the rules. The flirting that has happened in this chapter may result in the death of one of the two characters. I have based these ideas off the stories that have similar qualities to this book.

    1. Wow, I never realized the similarities between Romeo and Juilet to the relationship of Equality and Liberty. The forbidden actions for the people are what I can relate the two books to the most.

    3. I hadn't thought of Equality 7-2521 and Liberty 5-3000 as Romeo and Julliet either but after reading your post I think it is a great comparison.

    4. I do agree with you about the one dying part. Most love stories and romance novels end with something like that. Titanic, Cleopatra and Mark Antony, and Pocahontas. Obviously, there is tons more but thats a few famous ones.

    5. I believe that your theory that one of the two may die was a good prediction.

    8. The events that have been occuring definitely seem to resemble a "Romeo and Juliet" twist to it. However, I don't think that they will end like Romeo and Juliet, I think that this book will end up having a happy ending.

  2. Liberty gave Equality the name The Unconquered. (Pg.56) This name fits Equality because unconquered means not subdued by a higher power. He is breaking the rules the council set for him by writing. He is defying the council by going down in the tunnel and doing his experiments. He has to steal to support what he is doing and that is also breaking the law.
Honors: In the novel, Liberty calls Equality dearest one, and Liberty offers to get Equality a drink of water. Equality liked that Liberty called him dearest one and when she got the water for him he kissed her hands. (Pg.56) Earlier in the book Equality was relieved to find that Liberty was only seventeen and had not yet been sent to the palace of mating. (Pg.44) These interactions show that they care about each other. I think that Equality and Liberty will discover love.

    4. I agree with your opinion and supporting facts on the name Liberty has given Equality.

    5. I think that Equality and Liberty have feelings for each other also. I think they'll fall in love too.

  3. Liberty told Equality that she had given him the name of "The Unconquered".(page 56) This name fits Equality because he has not been fully conquered by the council. He is going against the council by doing the experiments in the tunnel and by talking to Liberty. Equality even called her 'the dearest one' which is also forbidden. (page 56) Liberty even gave him a drink from the moat and Equality kissed her hands.

    Honors:
The reader might feel like Liberty and Equality will fall in love and find a way to be together. Rand has already made the readers feel like they already have a crush on each other. I also think they will get married and have children together. Equality and Liberty already are attracted towards one another. It will only take time before they talk about having a future together.

  4. Liberty gave Equality the name, The Unconquered (page 56). This name fits Equality, mainly because of his courage to fight against the usual ways and beliefs. He refuses to be brought down from what he believes. He is disobeying the council by conducting his experiments in the tunnel, but won't quit. Though many disagree with him, he will stay unconquered.

Honors: With this interaction happening in the chapter, the reader will expect to see a realtionship between Liberty and Equality. Both have found a feeling unknown by others. On page 57, Liberty gave Equality water from her hands. They felt a feeling of care to each other. With this affection being forbidden, it shows how much they mean to each other.

    5. I also think the name Equality was given describes him perfectly because of the way he goes against what the Council says.

    6. I also think the name unconqoured fits equality. He doesn't listen to the laws and he wants to go and learn more about everything. This is what the society doesn't want.

  6. i think that the name that liberty has given Equility suits him well. she gave him the name unconquered(56).i think that the reason why she done this is because he has so much potential and that he seems like a man with many ideas and knows how to put them in action.i think that liberty knows that he has secret and it could alter the world but she does not know what.

Honors: i belive that to powerful individuals like them will try to convince the council that there is more to life then what they tell them to do. Also being such strong minded individuals i think that they will try to get freedom or at least they will run away. Another thing that i think that they will do is try to make the light box stronger and more powerful to prove the council wrong.

  7. Both Equality 7-2521 and Liberty 5-3000 have given each other special names even though it goes against the society’s laws (pg. 56). Liberty 5-300 gave Equality 7-2521 the name Unconquered (pg. 56). This is a very fitting name for Equality 7-2521. He is unconquered because he goes against everything the society tells him to do. Equality 7-2521 not only talks Liberty 5-3000, who is a woman, but he also has friends and a quest for knowledge that his society will not let him find.
Honors: I believe that Ayn Rand is showing her readers a loving future for Equality 7-2521 and Liberty 5-3000. It seems it me that the two of them will have a happy ending with each other. However, that doesn’t mean they will not have difficult times and trials ahead of them. I suspect he’ll try to take her away so she won’t have to live through the horrors of the Season of Mating. Perhaps the two of them might run away together but who knows?

    1. I didn't even think about him trying to take her away from the Season of Mating. Good use of imagination.

    2. I agree with your prediction of Equality trying to take Liberty away during the Season of Mating. Either that or he will try to influence the people so that he gets to be with her.

    3. I like your thought of the Season of Mating and what you think will happen.

  8. Liberty gave Equailty the name "The Unconquered".(56) This name does suit him well because he has gone against the council multiple times and in many different ways. He has yet to be caught doing his actions also. I think Liberty thinks like Equaility and she too wants to get what she wants. She sees things in him that no one else does.

Honors:Most likely Liberty and Equaility will form a group as one to defeat the council. Because like I said before they think alike. They give names for eachother, have obvious feeling for eachother also.(55-58) I know a romance is going to bloom from this fling but I really do believe it could have a dagger thrown into the picture and someone gets cut out of the relationship by a sad unwanted death. Thats only because most romances end tragically in some other very famous novels.

    2. I think it is very possible that everyone in the society could rebel against the council. In my opinion this would be a really good part in the book.

    3. Liberty and Equality could form a group to defeat the council, but I think that the Council is too powerful, and all the other people have been taught that the Council is correct.

  9. Liberty gave Equality the name "The Unconquered". This name fits because of Equality's personality. Equality refuses to conform to the rules that the rest of the society follows. He does what he thinks is right, regardless of the consequences. He does not allow himself to be controlled.

    Honors:
The reaction between Liberty and Equality foreshadows romance. I believe that at some point in the book, if they haven't already, thy will fall in love. I think this because of the use of phrases such as "our dearest one" (page 56). In addition to this, they given each other special names. This signifies that they have a special bond.

  10. Liberty gives Equality a name in this chapter. That name is Unconquered. I think this name fits Equality because they almost are unconquered. They don't listen to the Council, but they never get caught, and they are egar to know and feel things they are not suppose to. All of the people in the city do as they are told and never think twice anbout anything the Council says. They are controlled, or conquered. Equality is the exact opposite, and that's why this name fits.

honors: The interaction that happens between Liberty and Equality is forbidden in their society, yet they do it anyway. I think that in the later chapters of this book, Liberty and Equality are going to figure out some things that they have been kept from their wholle lives. Things that, if the Council knew, they would be punished somehow. I also think that they are secretly going to work together, and in the end they will en up being together. i also think it is very possible they will try to let their brothers know what they have been deprived of.

    1. I never would have thought they would try to share the love they have with their brothers if I hadn't read you post.

  11. Liberty gives the name Unconquered to Equality. In my opinion this name suits him because he has individualism. An example would be his preference to be in the House of Scholars(p.23).Him talking to Liberty is an example of him being unconquered because talking to her was against the law(p.42). That is why the name Unconquered is very suitable for Equality.
Honors: The interaction between Liberty and Equality is a foreshadowed romance. This is obvious because the first thing Equality says to Liberty is "your beautiful"(p.42). Readers can tell that their will be a confict later on because of their forbidden love. Readers would suspect that they might get caught and be punished or they might run away together. In my opinion they should run away together because that would be happier.

  12. Equality finds that he is referred to in the mind of Liberty as The Unconquered (p. 56). This name is very fitting for Equality. He does not submit or think as the others do, but obviously neither does Liberty. Without truly knowing Equality, Liberty has found his essence simply by seeing him from afar. The Unconquered is a perfect name for the commonly known Equality.

    ReplyDelete
  13. honors: The interaction that Rand creates in this book between Equality and Liberty suggests a romance. When Equality tells Liberty "You are beautiful, Liberty 5-3000" (p. 42), he shows love for her whether he realizes it or not. The laws forbid such a thing. I do not think that this will be a fairy tale ending. The readers must remember that dating, marriage, or even love is not heard of in this society. Perhaps, Liberty and Equality will come together as a force for independence.

    1. I agree that the book will most likely not have a fairy tale ending where the Council is overthrown.

    2. I like how you said maybe they will come together for independence.

  14. Liberty gives Equality the name “Unconquered.” This name fits him very well. The name unconquered means that he has not given up and continues to fight against the society that controls everyone. Because Equality doesn’t look like his other brothers and refuses to give in to the society, he is unconquered. When Liberty gives Equality it is like she is foreshadowing what will happen later in the book.
Honors: Based on this chapter, the reader expects for Equality and Liberty to be together. Because Liberty gives Equality the name “Unconquered” Liberty foreshadows that Equality will not give up fighting against the society. The reader expects Equality to find some way or another to take down the society. Also, because of the relationship between Equality and Liberty, the reader expects them to form a family together. Even if Equality and Liberty have to go through many hardships, the reader expects Equality and Liberty to find some form of freedom.

  15. Liberty 5-3000 has given Equality 7-2521 the name "The Unconquered" (Pg.56). That name matches Equality 7-2521 very well. He is the only independent person in his society. The council does not control him. There for he is an unconquered person.

Honors: In their society no one is attracted to anyone. But Equality 7-2521 and Liberty 5-3000 have a different connection. They love each other even though they don't know it. I predict that they will run off together. They will be the first couple.

    1. I like how you described Equality as the only independent person in the society.

  16. Liberty has given Equality 7-2521 the name "the Unconquered One". The name Liberty has given him fits very well. Equality has made the discovery of electricity, but no one knows. Also, Equality breaks laws that are set in the society. For example it says, "Such thoughts as these are forbidden," in reference to Equality and the "Golden One." (pg. 56) No one knows of all the things Equality is doing and that is why he is referred to as the "Unconquered One."
Honors: In this chapter, Liberty and Equality have told each other the names they call each other. According to the society they are not to talk to one another. Not even that, male and female are not supposed to think of another man or woman. They are sent to the Palace of Mating. Each spring man and woman are assigned a human of the opposite sex. Equality says, "It is an ugly and shameful matter, of which we do not like to think." Hopefully later in the book Equality and Liberty will disobey the society's laws further than what they have, and show them that there is something greater than the laws they have now.

    1. I like your description of how the name, "The Unconquered one" fits Equality.

  17. Equality was given the name "the Unconquered One" by Liberty on page 56. I believe his name fits perfectly in describing his personality as clever and secretive. His light bulb contraption, if ever found, would send his world in an uproar. By hiding in the shadows of lost and found, he has wittingly demised himself as a normal person, leaving the Council clueless. Also, by having a direct and immediate approach to the passage, no one could find him. He cleverly used an appropriate dwelling for experimentation.

Honor's: I expect Liberty and Equality to team up and work as a pair to solve all of their questions. Equality is determined to make a change in his world, and with a little coaxing, I am sure Liberty would love to help. Plus, it must be boring to do the same chores over and over again. Change is necessary in both of their lives. In the future, I expect a well-rounded relationship between them both as they fight to survive in secrecy.

  18. Liberty gives Equality the name "The Unconquered."(page 56) This fits him perfectly. He's the one that is trying to get out of the routines the council has made for everybody. He is so much differnt from everybody else. The biggest difference is how he stands up for himself when everyone else is scared. He is truly "Unconquered"
honors: This shows that later on in the novel that they will again. They already show that they have a nice friendly relationship that will grow. I have a feeling they will need each other to survive in the challeneges they will have to face ahead.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Liberty gives Equality the name "The Unconquered One". I feel that this name fits Equality perfectly. Equality is "unconquered" because the council has not yet grasped him into their hold, and he does not follow their beliefs. Equality's lifestyle does not seem to go by the strict rules of the Council. The other men in Equality's house follow the guidelines and seem to have let the Council control their lives, whereas Equality did not let the Council have full control over him.
    Honors:
Based on the interactions between Equality and Liberty, I believe that they will somehow work together to release themselves from this distorted lifestyle. Their forbidden introductions and talking may lead into more moments of interaction. I think that they will devise a plan to escape. The attraction that they have already developed for each other leads me to the thought that they will fall in love, and with that being said, I feel that Equality and Liberty will definitely find a way to be together. Since being together is not allowed, they may try to escape together, and find a new way to live.

  20. In chapter 4 Equality was given the name "The Unconquered One" by Liberty (page 56). In my opinion this name fit him perfect. It describes him almost spot on. He is no ones "pet". He does what he wants and to be honest could not care less about what people thought. He doesn't let anything get him down either, he always triumphs through every situation.

    Honors:
In the type of enviorment that Liberty and Equality are in they aren't really allowed to have any sort of feelings for others, but I have a feeling these two will go far together. The way the book describes there relation ship makes it seem like something magical. Also it seems they can always make some sort of connection, or make sparks fly when they see each other, and the way they give each other names makes it seem like they really passionate and know the other person on a personal type level, even though they haven't had much time to talk.

  21. Liberty gives Equality the name "The Unconquered." (pg. 56) This name fits Equality because he goes against the council and breaks the rules, therefore he is unconquered by the council. He is too smart to be held down by his society and he wants to discover the unknown. Equality refuses to follow the rules. I think Liberty likes that about him.
Honors: Liberty and Equality are very similar in how they act and think. They care about each other and I think this foreshadows romance. I think they'll fall in love later on in the book, if they haven't already. The fact that they gave each other special names signifies that they care for each other. I think its obvious that they love each other.

  22. The name given to Equality in this chapter by Liberty 5-3000 is, "The Unconquered". I believe that this name fits Equality very well. I believe this because he seems to know that something is wrong with the Council and that they're keeping something a secret. Equality is very suspicious of them and he wants to know what the Council may be hiding. Because of these things, I think that "The Unconquered" is a great name for Equality.

    ReplyDelete
  23. In this chapter, the author uses foreshadowing. He does this through the interaction of Equality and Liberty 5-3000. Through this interaction, we can tell that there is a strong connection between the two characters. Maybe they will work together to shut down the Council and find out what their hiding or they may escape from the society. The author definitely leaves you wondering what will happen.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Liberty gave Equality a name because he gave her a name. She gave him the name The Unconquered. I believe this name fits him very well. He does not care what the consequences of his actions are if he believes they are right. Equality shows that he is "Unconquered" by continuously defying the council by discovering things in his underground lab. He also is visiting Liberty on a regular basis, which is also against the law in his society.

Honors) I believe Liberty and Equality will fall in love. They will eventually run away from their society and be on their own to fend for themselves. Equality will try to present his invention to the council but will be rejected and he will be an outcast and will take Liberty with him. They will defy the council and try to find a different place to live. Liberty and Equality will be together until the end of the book.

    ReplyDelete
  25. On page 56 Liberty gives Equality the name "The Unconquered". She only gave him this name because he had previously given her one. I think this name suits him very well because he always seems to be going against what the council says even though that could lead to serious punishments such as death. He doesnt seem to let that phase him because he is very determined to gain his independence. I think him and Liberty will begin to fight for their right to be free together they just don't realize it yet because of what they have been taught.

Honors: Together I believe Liberty and Equality will work together and attempt to gain the independence. No one will expect this because of what the Council has taught them their whole life and from what we have learned throughout the book so far. Once Equality attempts to face the council with his new discovery they will more than likely regct him and he will have to be an outcast. I then think Liberty will come up with a plan for them both to escape to a place where they can live together but be themselves not one of a group.

    1. I agree that Liberty and Equality will work together to overthrow the council.

  26. Equality is given the name "The Unconquered" by Liberty 5-3000. This name is very fitting to Equality 7-2521 because he refuses to let the Council control him. He disobeys and rebels in order to be an independent individual. He does not want to be part of a group or society when he is capable of bigger and better things. Liberty recognizes that Equality will not go down without a fight.
Honors: Based on what occurred in this chapter, the author may be trying to hint that Equality and Liberty will rebel together. They both are willing to go against the laws they are supposed to abide by. This leads me to believe that they will turn away from the Council and commit an awful sin. They will continue to communicate with each other, which is a sin in itself. However, they will go even further in their betrayal by discovering love in each other.

  27. Liberty gives Equality the name "The Unconquered". I beleive that this name fits him very well. Equality is not like the rest of his brothers because he doesn't follow the Council's laws. Equality isn't afraid to stand up for what he beleives is right. Liberty notices this about him. I think "The Unconquered" is a perfect name for Equality.

Honors: Based on what has happened so far in the book, I beleive that Equality and Liberty will fall in love. Even though in their society your not allowed to feel different about one person than another, they will somehow find a way to make it work. I think that the two of them are going to run away from their soiety and start their own little society. Or Equality and Liberty might come together and overthrow the Council. I wonder what will happen to the two of them.

    ReplyDelete
  28. "The Unconquered" is the name that Liberty gives to Equality.(page 56) "The Unconquered" is a fitting name for Equality because he doesn't let the Council direct his life in every aspect. He still does experiments even though he is a Street Sweeper.(pages 52-53) Also, the word equality is shown as if it can't be put down by rules and the government; equality will always prevail, even if it is in a subtle way. "The Unconquered" fits Equality because he is determined, and he will not be put down by anything.

    Honors:
The interaction between Liberty and Equality foreshadows that they will fall in love and run away from their homes at night to meet in Equality's underground house. They could end up running away and not coming back. I think that they will be found out and be punished by the Council. If this happens, they will be each be married to someone that they do not love, and they will be miserable for the rest of their lives. They would end up wishing that they would have never met.

    1. I definitely agree with your opinion on why Liberty calls Equality "the Unconquered." He is independent, he defies the "law" yet he has not been caught. He hasn't been conquered so this is a very fitting name.

    2. I disagree that they will be punished by the council. I believe that they will flee to escape punishment. I think the thought of facing punishment by the council will act as the catalyst in their fleeing from the society.

  29. Liberty has chosen the name "Unconquered" for Equality.(page 56) He doesn't let the Council control his thoughts or actions. He stands his ground and fights. "We will not tell you".(page 63)Equality refuses to give the council something even in death. "And if we ever surrender it, we shall surrender our life with it also".(page 34)The name fits his personality, he's determined and that's why the name "Unconquered" is the perfect fit for him

HONORS:The little interaction has made Liberty and equality grow to love each other and share the same views on the Council. They will probably end up running away to his underground house. Where they will get caught and Liberty will get sent to mating. That would be the last time they will ever see each other and in the end wishing they never met.

  30. Passage #1: Equality 7- 2521 tells Liberty 7- 3000 that he has named her the Golden One in his thoughts, and she tells him that she has also given him a name, The Unconquered (pg.56). Liberty has chosen the perfect title to Equality because it resembles his personality. He is his own kind, special, and no one can take him under control. He is such a rebel, loves breaking the rules, and is never worried. He is mankind himself.

Honors: Based on the relationship between Equality 7- 2521 and Liberty 7- 3000 they will stick together. They are already in trouble for talking to each other and and getting along. Now they have to stick together, or all the breaking rules, and be their own was just a big waste and they would get into serious trouble. Also, their love is too strong to break. It' s time for them to fight for what they believe in and not the Council.

  31. 1. Liberty gives Equality the name "The Unconquered." This name is perfect for him because he has went against a bunch of the rules. She knows that he is taking a risk to even talk to her. He brakes the rules all the time and she knows it, but she likes that about him.

Honors : I think that Equality and Liberty will work together and leave. They both go against the rules anyway. Niether of them like the rules, they aren't happy. At the end of the book I hope that they will be together.

    1. I agree with you that they will leave. That seems like a very possible out come.

  32. #1- The name that Liberty gave Equality, "The Unconquered", suits him very well. Equality is very rebelious and doesnt let anyone take control over him. He thinks differently from everyone else, he loves adventures, and he is never concerned. He doesnt let anyone tell him how to act, he is his own person.

Honors- I believe that Equality and Liberty will stay together. They both love each other way too much to break away at this point, and they have so much in common. They both are breaking the rules and dont't like the council. So I believe they will just fight against the council for what they believe in.

    1. I agree that he was given this nickname for being rebellious in his thoughts against the Council.

  33. Liberty gave Equality the name "The Unconquered". This name describes Equality's unwillingness to dwell in a society with no freedom. He thinks differently than others, and his mind is not controlled by Council. Equality basically defies rules. Altogether, I think that the name "The Unconquered" fits him perfectly.

Honors: In my opinion, this foreshadows love. Equality favors LIberty, which is technically against the rules. They are both willing to break rules, which shows similar characters. I think that they will form a bond that will not be broken easily. I also think that there will be a conflict in the future that works against them.

  34. The name that Liberty has given Equality is The Unconqured. This is appropite because it is a statement that the Council has not gotten to him. He still thinks for himself and he doesn't let the rules tie him down. He studies at night even though hes not supposed to and hes risking his life to learn. Even though everybody else is afraid, Liberty knows that Equality is not.

Honors: Foreshadowing in Chapoeter 4 occurs when Equality and Liberty are talking in the field and she gives him a drink of water. It is obvious that they are falling for eachother but relationships between Men and Women are forbidden. Supposedly, women and men are brothers and sisters so its not possible for them to have a relationship. However I predict that Rquality and Liberty will ignore those rules and fall in love, whatever the price.

  35. The name that Liberty has given to Equality is "The Unconquered." (p.56) This is a very fitting name because it directly describes the actions of Equality. He has found a part of the old world, he has created electricity, and he has defied the council. Even though he has done all of these things, he hasn't been caught, therefore he remains unconquered. This not only describes his actions but also his feelings. Equality has let his feelings soar and he is different, yet those qualities have not been subdued and he has not been conquered.

    Honors-
Based upon the interaction of Liberty and Equality in this chapter, this reminds me of a tragic love story. Even though they are supposed to be seperate, they break the rules and speak and flirt with one another. I predict that one way or another they are both going to at least try to get to freedom. Either they will succeed, or one of them will fail and the other will go on. Either way, I believe that in the end they will be free at least temporarily.

    1. I like how you used the term "old world" and he has DEFIED the council.

  36. The names that the council gives people, they are very simple and have no personality to them. They are just a word and then a series of numbers. Liberty gives Equality a new name, The Unconquered. This name fits Equality's personality perfectly. The reason being, he has remained his own person, despite the council trying to make him like everyone else.

    Honors

Equality hasn't had any experience with women so his talk with Liberty was special. Liberty isn't like the rest of the farmers, she's more like Equality. Since she has broken the council's rulers, this tells us that she is willing to risk punishment to talk to Equality. This tells us that Liberty will try to be with Equality, even if that means she might get in trouble to do so. Liberty most likely will become, very close to Equality.

    1. I agree with you that Equality and Liberty will face trouble together in the future due to their rebellious spirits.

  37. Liberty 5-3000 gave Equality 7-2521 a name like he did to her. He named her the “Golden One” and she named him the “Unconquered.” Both of the names are very fitting to each of them. Those thoughts are not supposed to be thought, let alone said (pg. 56).Equality 7-2521 is different from everyone else and doesn’t fall into the same patterns; unconquered. So, the name given to him by Liberty 5-300 is very suiting to him.
Honors: Ayn Rand does some foreshadowing in this chapter of this book. There is obviously a connection between Equality 7-2521 and Liberty 5-3000. Will this connection lead to something more in the future chapters? I think it will. It’s almost as if they are meant to be together. The society will most likely eventually find out, therefore the society and everyone in it will be changed forever – whether it is good or bad, it will.

  38. Chapter Four

    1. Liberty gives Equality the name of the Unconquered. (pg. 55) The name is fitting for Equality because it describes his rebellious personality. Unlike his brethren, he strives to search for more in the constraining society he is trapped in. His desire for more in the world goes against the beliefs of the World Council, making him an outcast because of his “unconquered spirit”. Ayn Rand chose her character’s names to coincide with their personalities and the name Unconquered for equality suits his character extremely well.

Honors: During chapter four, Equality and Liberty interact through spoken words and physical contact. Equality refers to Liberty as oh dearest one; which is symbolic of his internal gravitation towards Liberty as love interest. Liberty also shows her first sign of compassion and affection towards Equality in chapter four by offering Equality water in her cupped hands. (pg. 57) I believe this interaction between Equality and Liberty is a foreshadowing of the development of a relationship between them. Ayn Rand’s earlier description of Liberty as rebellious leads me to believe that her and Equality will flee the constraining society later in the plot.

  39. Liberty gave Equality the name “The Unconquered”. (Page 55) I think this is a very fitting name for him, as he thinks for himself and isn’t controlled by the council. He is a rebel, striving to learn without guidance and prove that people aren’t pictured as a whole, but as separate entities. Naming Equality the Unconquered also shows that Liberty isn’t afraid to break the rules, because it is making his original nametag obsolete. The Unconquered lets his feelings guide him, while his fellow citizens listen to the council.

Honors- Further interaction between Equality and Liberty is foreshadowed by all of the talking and contact between the two. I think that further into the book, Equality will realize that he loves Liberty. This will cause a problem, as it is a sin to love one person more than the rest of your fellow citizens. Since seeing each other is against the law, I think Equality will get arrested, since Liberty is still in her field doing her job. If Equality can get Liberty to think like he does about the council, then he may be able to start the rebellion that he needs to start a new, scientific world.

  40. In this chapter Liberty gives Equality the name of unconquered. I believe that this name fits him very well because equality doesn't obey the council. Equality does what he wants when he want and isn't exactly how he is supposed to be which is like everyone else. He is different and he is a rebel.
Honors: I like the relationship between liberty and equality. I believe that equality likes liberty a lot. I feel that liberty isn't like equality in the way of rebellion. I can see equality having illegal feelings for liberty. I cann also see equality getting in trouble with the council in later chapters.

  41. Liberty had given him the name, the Unconquered. The name definitely fits because he is a rule breaker and the council has not conquered him.
Honors: The interaction between the two in this chapter foreshadow love in the future. I think that they just don't know what love is but I think they will soon figure it out. When the two do figure out the feeling of love they will be together.

  42. By now, Equality and Liberty both have new names that they call each other. Liberty is named the Golden One by Equality. Now Liberty gives him the name " The Unconquered."(pg.56) Unconquered literally means not conquered or untouched. This name easily fits Equality because he can't be stopped. He is breaking the Council's rules left and right. Then again if he is unconquered, then he will never be caught.

Honors: By Liberty giving Equality a respectful nickname, she has showed some interest in him. Equality is easily okay with this. It appears that the Golden One is against the society she is living in, just like Equality. Equality will be happy because he not only likes the Golden One, but can also use some help involving his possible rebellion. Maybe these two will also make a good couple later on in the novel.

  43. Liberty gives Equality the name "The Unconquered."(pg.56) The name fits Equality because he disobeys The Society's rules. He doesn’t obey the society, in a way he is like a rebel because he does what he wants. Equality disobeys the rules of the society when he gives Liberty the name "The Golden one."(pg.55) He also holds her dearer to him when he calls her "Our Dearest One."(pg.56)
By how the writer writes the chapter you get a feeling that Equality and Liberty will get into a relationship. The writer hints at the start of an relationship by using "Our Dearest One" and "Golden one."(pg.56) Another way she hints to that point is when Liberty offers Equality a drink and he keeps his lips to her hands.(pg.57) She also shows this when "The Golden one" steps back and stands looking at her hands, then moves back as if not able to turn from "The Unconquered."(pg.58) In the future I expect Equality to get in trouble for his differences and for how he thinks and feels.

  44. Liberty gave Equality the name “The Unconquered” (page 56). It fits him perfectly because he defies the Consul. He won’t let them control his action, words, or thoughts. He is determined to find the truth that the Consul is keeping from him. He’ll never let them win him over and he’ll never give up.
Honors: I believe that Equality and Liberty will work together to find out even more about the secrets of the Consul. I feel like they have a connection and might fall in love. I think they will use each other to keep them going through the hard times of life. They could go live and have a family together.

  45. Liberty nick names Equality "The Unconquered" (Page 56). I think this name fits Equality great. He goes against Council, and he dosn't let them take his individuality over. Equality also nick names Liberty. This clues the reader in on the fact that the two are much alike. They both think for themselves, and don't really care about Counsul
    Honors:
I think the two will continue going against counsul because they both are very strong willed individuals. I could see the two possibly escaping the rule of Council, or even changing Coucils views, and laws.

  46. The Council is against two people having feelings for one another not only this, but do not want a male and female interacting. These two thought do have a strong relationship and i feel it will get strong as they go along. Equality has already went against the council so I don't see that he will stop.

  47. Liberty gave Equality the name “The Unconquered.” (p.56) I think this name suits Equality very well considering that unconquered means unable to be put down, taken over, or stopped from doing something by a higher power. He clearly states that he is sinning to write this, which is defying the Councils. (p.17) He also defies the Council’s laws by stealing and practicing experiments of his own for his own knowledge and curiosity. Equality rebels every time he breaks a law or rule for his own gain, which would be why he is unconquered by the laws of the Council.

    Honors:
The reader may suspect that the two, Liberty and Equality are in love. The things that follow this may be that the two will overthrow the government to be with one another or keep a secret love. In the society they live it is forbidden to show preference let alone be in love so they are breaking the rules, but maybe blinded by their love. Since they have decided not to follow the rules then it could result in severe punishments or maybe even death to one or both of them. Maybe they will defy the rules more and run away together or maybe they will find a way to be in love in their society.
