Chapter Nine

Respond to the questions below.

Equality and Liberty are reunited in the Uncharted Forest. What is it that Equality says is the “bond” between them?

Read the quote that begins “There is some error, one frightful error . . . (pg 86). In response to this quote, what do you believe is the error that Equality is trying to identify?

Honors' Discussion Prompt
In this chapter, Equality questions the morality of his former society. Contrast what he was previously taught about solitude, good, evil and joy to what he now believes. What events have brought him to this belief system? Do you agree with/ like his progression of thought? Explain your opinion.

98 comments:

  1. #1: Equality said that “Joy “is bond between them. (Pg.82) The bond between them is joy because they are free from the council’s laws. They can go anywhere they please on their own accord. Most importantly they get to make their own decisions, together. The Joy comes from being able to do those things.
#2: The error Equality is trying to find is in love. His society taught him that to love someone more than your other brothers is wrong. No one can be their own person and personal preference is a step towards that. (Pg.41) Equality realizes that he feels something more Liberty. He likes what it is and he can understand why that is a bad thing.
Honors: Equality was taught that joy should come from working with his brothers and being with them. He was also taught that being alone is evil. Equality found joy in working alone with his wires and in being with Liberty. He now believes that it is ok to be alone and joy can find joy in other things. I agree with his progression of thought because being alone and being your self is not a bad thing.

    1. I agree with what you think. It makes a lot of sense and it is kind of how I saw it.

    2. I like the way you described Equality's outlook on being alone as a joyful thing.

  2. 1. Equality states that joy is the bond between the Golden One and himself. (pg.83) He feels that joy is what they can experience together since they no longer have to abide by the Council's laws and restrictions. The two can finally be together without fear or hesitation. This brings them much happiness. Also, knowing that they can stay this way for the rest of their lives is definitely something to be joyful about.
    2. Love is the error Equality is trying to identify. Everyone in his society taught him not to show preference, so love is impossible to display. He knows something is missing in his life, and he also knows that there is something about Liberty that stands out to him. Equality does not understand why his feelings for Liberty are so awful. Although, he will soon figure out that love is what he has been missing out on.
Honors: Equality has believed all his life that being selfish, thinking for yourself, and being alone are evil. The only good things in life were pleasing others and looking at the 'big picture'. His ideas and moral beliefs are now the total opposite. Equality believes that being alone and thinking for himself and doing things that will benefit him as an individual are not wrong at all. I agree with his new way of thinking because always trying to please others will drive you crazy and leave you without understanding of your true identity.

  3. 1. Eqaulity' says the bond is joy itself. He has probably fallen in love with Liberty, for they kissed in the woods(p.83). I assume he is amused about the two of them being damned together(p.82). Equality and Liberty are prepared to start a life together, and they were going to build a houseip in the woods(p.85). Equality was alone, but now he has a companion to spend time with. They are probably in love now.
    2. I wold say Equality is looking for choice. Since choice can decide most things, the council probably did not allow it. They tried to hide it, so people could not fall in love or choose their destiny. That is probably why Equality was torn to find his lost feelings(p.87). Liberty talked about love, yet she covered it up by saying she is alone(p.86).
Honors: I agree With Equaliy's new thoughts. He used to think life was planned, but now he sees the truth. The missing knowledge of everything caused society to be less intelligent, yet he wanted to teach the world of his discovery. The ignorance of man caused Equality's demise, and that forced him into the uncharted forest. Equality will rise to the occasion and make the world aware of his intellect.

  4. Equality says that joy is the bond between him and Libberty. They are happy that they are together, and Equality is joyful Liberty wants to be with him. Equality sees them as being "meant for each other" as a bond. A bond no one could break. Having a bond like this would only bring more happiness to them both.

In the qoute on p. 86, I think the error that equality is trying to figure out is the way man see and do things. How they are taught, and the rules they make for themselves are wrong. Equality can't figure this out because he was once part of those men. The men who only thinkas a WE. Sooner or later Equality will figure it out and let it be known.

honors: Before Equality went into the uncharted Forest he was taught that good things only come as a WE. Evil things were the things or thoughts of only one. Seeing Liberty, and kissing her, made Ewquality realize that having a female around was not an evil thing. Being alone in the forest with just his light box that he, and only he, made, made him see how knowing what you know, and being whoever you are is good. In my opinion, the thoughts that Equality, and now Liberty, are having are good. It is going to allow them to learn more, and to live a life that is not centered around a WE.

  5. 1) Equality states that there is a band between him and Liberty. That bond is they are both free and happy to be free. Liberty follows Equality into the forest because she wants to go what he does(page 82). This also helps create the special bond they share together. Their bond is helped by them both being 'damned' together. Equality and Liberty both discover what is true and what is untrue which also helps build this bond.

    2) The quote means Equality is havong trouble deciding on what he wants. He does not know whether or not he should fall in love with Liberty or if he should go on with his adventure. He finally gets to do tasks on his own. Equality seems to become confused by this and thinks there is some kind of error. He is so used to never having to do something for himself so he thinks doing everything is an error.

    Honors:
When Equality lived in the society, he was taught that there was no joy and everything you did was good as long as you did it with your brothers. He was taught that the evil was the Uncharted Forest and the people before his time were evil. Equality now realizes evil was his society and he regrets living his life like he did. He now has joy and can have it whenever he wants. I agree with his thinking process and I wouls have done the samethings if I was in the same situation. Living like Equality did in the society would basically brainwash me. When I would get to the forest I would realize exactly what Equality did.

  6. 1.Equality says that joy is the bond between him and liberty. The reason why there bond is a joy is because they can be together without any people to tell them what to do.Also they can be together and be happy. Also there bond is a joy is because there is no council arounnd that is telling them what to do.

2.the joy that his brothers is missing out on is love. Equality found it with liberty and his brothers are to scared to be around women. Also they don't even get the chance to be with women and find love while equality broke the rules and done it anyways.(86)

  7. 1. The bond is “Joy” (pg. 82). Equality 7-2521 says that because he and Liberty 5-3000 are in love. Usually, when one thinks of love, an emotion often thought is joy or happiness (pgs. 86, 83). Another reason is because they are free from living for the great “We”. When Equality 7-2521 runs from his society Liberty 7-2521 follows after him, wanting to be with him, even if it means running away from her home (pg. 82). That shows the true love and devotion Liberty 5-3000 has for Equality 7-2521.

    2. Equality 7-2521 is looking for freedom. Freedom would allow the brothers in the society would allow people to make their own choices. If the brothers could choose for themselves what to do, when to do whatever, who to love, ect...then they would be happier. Having freedom would also lead to individuality within the society such as when Liberty 3-5000 tried to tell Equality 7-2521 that she, herself, alone, loves him (pg. 86-87). Once the brothers in the society could have freedom as individuals life would be much better. They would be happier and in some cases they might be more willing to help the society if they weren’t forced into it.

Honors: He was originally taught that solitude was unhappiness. There is only evil in going against the great “We”, or going against their brothers. Good can only be found with your brothers, helping them, agreeing with them, anything. To gain joy citizens help their brothers, working only towards the success of all people not just one person or themselves. Equality 7-2521 started to think differently since he was a child. He knew that when he studied math and sciences or any other form of learning that he was happy. In his tunnel he was able to find happiness in his solitude, learning whatever he wanted. Then once his invention of the glass box was rejected and he ran away he truly discovered solitude and being able to control his own destiny. I partially believe with Equality 7-2521’s beliefs. I just don’t completely agree with thinking ONLY for one’s self, I think that people should help others but not to the extreme that his society believes in.

  8. 1. In this chapter, Equality and Liberty are reunited. Equality says that joy is their bond. They are happy with each others' company. They are content with each other, and they do not desire for the company of any others. They aren't afraid of them forest, and they do not care about anything else temporarily.

    2. Equality is referring to the error of the lack of individuality. He is referring to the loss of words such as I. Although he does not yet know what, he knows that something is wrong. He knows that something has been kept from him all his life. He has been kept from uniqueness/individuality.

    Honors:
His entire life, Equality has been taught that solitude is evil. He has also been taught that servitude is right and good. However, he now feels joy in solitude and freedom. He is starting to believe that he has been mislead. Although I do not necessarily like the increasingly selfish thoughts that Equality is having, I would not say that solitude is evil. However, my religious beliefs cause me to believe that servitude is good.

  9. 1. Equality and Liberty are reunited in this chapter. Equality says that the “bond” between them is joy. Now they can be together without the council being in charge of their lives. With love comes the emotion of happiness or joy, which is another reason why that’s their “bond.” Equality sees it as having a unbreakable bond.
    2. I believe that the error is love. All of his life he had been taught to love all brother equally and him loving liberty more would be a crime. His feelings for liberty confuse him because he doesn’t understand why in the society they are considered wrong. Now that they are both away from the society it doesn’t matter how they feel, but Equality still doesn’t understand why it’s such a bad thing. He soon finds out what he’s been missing out on, and that’s love. (pg. 86, 87)
Honors: Equality was taught that happiness and joy came from helping his brothers and being with them. He was also taught that being alone is evil and that anything “unknown” was bad. The council believed that everything was already known and didn’t like it whenever Equality discovered that it wasn’t true. While Equality was alone working on his wires and when he was in the forest before Liberty came he realized that there is joy in being alone. He also found joy in being with Liberty though. I agree with the fact that he is finding joy in things he never knew before but I also believe you should care for other people too and not just yourself.

    1. I completely agree with you on the idea of caring for others as well as caring for yourself.

  10. 1. Once Equality 7-2521 and The Golden One are united, Equality 7-2521 talks of their bond. Their bond is a joy bond of being together. Together they forgot all things of their brothers. They have a very strong bond between them. they walked into an unknown world together (Pg.84). They have each others back.

    2. On page 86 there is one big error of the society. That error is a missing word. Their society is missing "I". They do not know what it means to be an individual. The society always thinks as people being "WE". This is the big error of the loss of the knowledge of "I".

Honors: Equality 7-2521's first beliefs were to care for all of his brothers. He belived that solitude and being an individual was evil. Once assigned to be a street sweeper he discovered a tunnel from the unmentionalable times. He then began experimenting and inventing. This helped change him into an individual. After the scholars denied his invention he then became an even stronger individual. I believe that it is good to become a strong indidual. But not to the point of only careing for yourself. Over all I really like Equality 7-2521's progress of becoming an individual.

  11. 1.Equality says that their is a bond between him and Liberty. This bond is a bond they call "joy"(page 82). I think they feel this because they finally found someone that will speak their mind. That brings them together and makes them feel "joy".
    2. I feel the error is love. It's this new thing to him that no one has experienced in years. He is finally feeling this and he doesn't know what to do.
honors: Equality was taught before that joy and happiness comes work with your brothers. Being "evil" is caused by being independent and make choices for yourself not your brothers. Equality learners though that this is selfish of the council to make people think this way and branches out and starts being more of a individual.

  12. 1)I believe the"bond" between Equality and Liberty is joy(p.83). I believe that the joy first starts when Equality called her beautiful(p.42). I believe their love gets stronger when they give each other names(p.55). Another reason that their bond is joy because Equality was sad when he realized he left her behind(p.77). Another reason is that they found each other again and had a joyful embrach(p.81&83).
    2) The error is that he is trying to locate the word 'I'. They are looking for this word because in the book it says that they are trying to look for a word(p.87). In the book Liberty trys to form a statement without using the word but then gives up(p.87). That's how I know that, that is the word their looking for. Another reason is that Equality previously tried to figure out the word. Most of all I know their looking for that word because "we love you" doesn't sound right(p.86).
Honors: Equality was taught all his life that what was good was contributing to his brothers and the city and bad was all thing from the Unmentionable Times. Now Equality realizes that he needs to do things for himself and things from the Unmentionable Times is good 'cause it contain knowledge. The society says all men should be happy all the time. Equality learns that all men in the city have fear and what true joy actual feels like. I agree with his thought because it's reasonable.

  13. 1. Equality describes the bond between himself and Liberty as joy. Equality is so overjoyed when he sees Liberty that he kisses her. He later adresses her as "our dearest one."(page 83) Liberty says to Equality that she loves him.(page 86) Then, she says that that is not what she meant to say, but she can't find the word she is looking for.(page 87)

    2. Equality is trying to identify love. People do crazy things for people that they love. Love goes against what people would normally reason. Love is the only feeling that compells people to go outside of their comfort zone. Love is the frightful error in the thinking of men.

    Honors:
Equality was previously taught that solitude is bad, and that anything done alone and for self pleasure is bad. He now believes that what he was taught is wrong. He starts to doubt the law. He sees that joy came from him doing things that bore no relation to his brothers.(page 85-86) He finds out for himself that joy doesn't always come from doing things for others.

  14. #1: Equality and The Golden One have a bond that Equality has stated in this chapter. When The Golden One came to be with Equality they were both overjoyed. "There is joy as a bond between us" is said by Equality to The Golden One(p. 83). This joy they both feel is the bond. No man in their old life was allowed to feel this power. Others are too scared or uneducated to share the bond. They are alone in the Uncharted Forest but they share the bond and feeling of joy and perhaps love.

    ReplyDelete
  15. #2: The error that Equality refers to on page 86 must be mans philosophy on instinct. Humans have the instinct to love, to be individual, and to have drive. Equality is confused because through his life he has been taught that believing and serving his natural instinct is wrong. Now that he has detached from his old society, he has a love for The Golden One, individual experiences, and the drive for education (p. 86). What he is still contemplating is exactly what the error is. Equality questions whose philosophy is correct. He is having a good time experiencing these instincts but the Council thinks it is a sin.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Honors: I agree and disagree with the new opinions of Equality. All of his life he has been taught that evil is those without their brothers, but those with their brothers as one are the only humans to experience joy, solitude, and good. Equality now sees that this is wrong and I agree with him. Equality's opinions seem to be a bit too drastict in another direction. He thinks he is better because of his looks, his freedom, and his invention. In many ways he is better off but most of his recent thoughts are too vain. Equality's vanity could lead him down the wrong path because in a way that just proves the Council right. The Council is correct in the sense that vanity is bad but they should not have tried to prevent it in such unnatural ways. This societies drastic measures have the people uneducated on what truly is correct. In my opinion people should be individual and proud, but not to the point that Equality has already reached. In today's society most people share and follow that belief because they are educated to know how to behave and have their own opinions.

    ReplyDelete
  17. 1.) Equality feels the bond between them is joy. They feel that way because they are no longer under the bonds of the council. He feels like they are meant for each other and that they will spend the rest of life together. The bond is joy because Equality feels overjoyed when Liberty comes to be with him forever.
2.) I think Equality feels the error is mans instict. He doesn't understand why human kind does that. Mans instict is how to love, how to feel, how to react, and things of that nature. When he was young he was taught the opposite of all of this. He was taught to not be individual and to treat everyone equal. Experiencing instinct for Equality is giving him a good time.

    1. I like your opinion of what equality is feeling and why.

  18. 1. Whenever Equality sees Liberty in the forrest he states that there is a special bond between them. Equality says that the special bond they have is "joy". This is because Equality and Liberty have fallen in love with each other and one experiences joy and hapiness in a love like theirs. Liberty even tells Equality "we love you" but then takes it away because we is not what she meant to say (pg.86).

    2. I think the error Equality is trying to think of is the word "I". This is because Equality knows that their is a word out there to only talk about one person (I)instead of having to feel like he's a part of something all the time by saying we. Equality states that the knowledge of this error is with in him struggling to be born, because Equality knows that he has heard this word before he just can't remember it. Equality also feels that the Golden One is trying to recall that word too (pg.87).

Honors: Equality's whole life he has been taught that being alone is a sin, or finding joy or being happy about something was a sin. But while being in the forrest Equality has come to the realization that he has been taught wrong, and these things aren't sins. Equality has always suspected that the Council was wrong but didn't really find out for sure till then. I agree with the new way of how Equality sees things. Equality was just the first out of his brothers to realize that the Council is evil and wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  19. 1) The Golden One follows Equality into the Forest. When the two meet Equality says that they share a special bond and that bond is "Joy". They share joy because they can go anywhere they want and do anything they please while in the Forest. Equality and The Golden One have, in a sense, fallen in love with each other. Equality says they share joy because when they are together they feel happy.

    2) Equality knows there is an error but can not say what it is. I believe this error is love. Equality's society has always taught him that there is supposed to be no feelings toward one being and their features. His society stresses that there can be no contact between male and female except for one time in the year. Equality defied this law but cannot understand what the feeling he had that compelled him to do this (Love).

Honors) Equality was taught that being alone was bad. He was also taught that to find happiness and joy, they had to work for his brothers. Equality finds out that being alone and thinking for himself is not bad at all. He also finds joy/ happiness in being in the Forest with Liberty and being independent. I totally agree with his progression in thought and wish he would have realized this sooner.

  20. 1. Equality says that their bond is "joy." (p.82) Equality and Liberty have chosen eachother which nobody else in the society has been able to do. They have done something that nobody else has done, they have fallen in love. Equality feels love and joy because Liberty has come to live in the forest with him for the rest of his life. Liberty also loves Equality because she says "we love you" but then she takes it back because she did not intend to say "we." (p.82)

    2. Equality knows there is an error but his society blinded him from figuring out what that error is. That error that he is confused about is love. The background from which Equality came was a no emotion background, and he is beginning to doubt the roots of that sort of society. Even though men and women are not supposed to get together except for a select group once a year, Equality breaks that law that used to bind him. He loves and does not know how to explain that new intriging feeling.

    Honors-
In his former society, Equality was taught that solitude is bad and aginst morale and law. He was taught that the only way to be happy and to be successful was to become one with his brothers and work with them. In the forest Equality discovers that what his society said seems to go against all logic. He discovers joy and happiness come from his actions that do not do anything for or with any of his brothers. I agree with and like his progression of thought because he learns that independence is sometimes the best, and I definitely have to agree with that newfound opinion.

  21. 1- Equality and Liberty are reunited in the Uncharted Forest. Joy is the bond between them. Equality and Liberty are so joyful because they are finally free from the council and they have no law above them. Now that they're in the Uncharted Forest, they can live however they wish. I believe that joy is the reason that Equality and Liberty are friends.

2- I believe that the error that Equality is trying to identify is love. Him and Liberty are starting to identify this, but his brothers are not. For so long, Equality has been taught by the
Council that it's wrong to love someone more than others. I believe that Equality is realizing that the Council is actually deceiving everyone, and that it's not really wrong. Eventually, I believe that Equality's 'brothers' will identify love too.

    Honors:
In this chapter, Equality questions the morality of his former society. Previously, he has been taught by the Council that loving anyone more than anyone else is wrong. He has also been taught that it's wrong to use singular words. Now, Equality is starting to defy the Council by starting to fall in love with Liberty. Also, I believe that he is starting to find out some singular words.

  22. 1: Equality said that "Joy" is the bond between them. (Pg.82) The bond is joy because they are free from the council’s laws and the routine of life. They can go anywhere they please on their own accord, and not be reconciled for. Most importantly, they get to make their own decisions, together. The Joy comes from being able to do those things in harmony.

2: The error Equality is trying to find is in love. His society taught him that to love someone more than your other brothers is wrong. No one can be their own person, and personal preference is a step towards that. (Pg.41) Equality realizes that he feels something towards Liberty. He likes what it is and he can understand why that is a bad thing, but wishes he wasn't scorned for it in his society.

Honors: He was originally taught that solitude was unhappiness. There is only evil in going against the great “We”, or going against their brothers. Good can only be found with your brothers, helping them, agreeing with them, anything, to gain joy, citizens help their brothers, working only towards the success of all people not just one person or themselves.

  23. When Equality and Liberty are reunited in the Uncharted Forest, Equality states that he had never known what possible joy was possible to men. (pg.83) Here, Equality states that joy is the bind between them. Equality was never allowed interaction with women or true interaction with many people. Equality enjoys spemfimg time with others, especially the Golden One. There was always something missing in his life that he could not find, and that was the bond of joy that he now shares with the Golden One.

The erroe that Equality is trying to identify is individuality. The council has erased all individuality and Equality and the Golden One have never known it. On pg. 87 the Golden One describes her love for Equality and struggles to say that they as an individual love Equality as an individual. They struggle to understand the concept of individuality. They want to know what it is to live for themselves.

Honors: Equality was originally taught that solitude was eviul and led to great unhappiness. Evil is being an individual and going against the society and your brothers. Good could only be found with your brothers. Joy was obtained by helping your brothers and trying to gain success for everyone as a whole. Equality found happiness in his tunnel in solitude and in his knowledge. He learned that thinking sloely about others is evil and thinking about yourself is good. I don't completely agree with Equality's progression of thought because I think that you should think of others sometimes, but not as much as the society wants people to.

  24. 1- Equality states that the bond is joy itself. Equality and Liberty are both joyful because they are free. They have no rules to go by from the Council. Liberty tells Equality she wants to be damned together, but in the last chapter we knew they are not really damned. Equality and Liberty are joyful about being in the forest together which is what Equality says the similar bond is.
2- Equality's error he is trying to identify is love. Equality has fallen in love with Liberty. All of his life Equality was taught not to show favoritism. He can feel this emotion of love, but cannot figure out what he is feeling. Equality knows his feeling for Liberty, but it doesn't make sense to him because this was not taught in his society to man.
Honors- In his former society, Equality is taught that being alone is good and thinking of a woman is evil. He says, "And we were frightened that we had lived for twenty-one years and had never known what joy is possible to men." (pg.83) Now that Equality is in the forest he thinks differently. He now realizes that none of this is evil. He can love Liberty and no harm would be made. Equality's new belief system is a way to think more of 'I' instead of 'we' even though he doesn't know that yet. I agree with Equality's beliefs because I feel that everyone should be different, and that is not the way of the society.

  25. 1) Equality states that the bond is joy. They are happy becasue they can be together. They know what it is like to be able to love someone passionately instead of randomly mating with someone once a year. Liberty says that she wants to be damned together because she also knows that she truely is not damned. They are enjoying being in the forest together which is the similar bond.

    2) The error is love. Equality has fallen head over heels for Liberty. Equality has always known that their is no love, and there is no feelings for other people. He finally can feel love. Just he doesn't really understand what love is. He knows his feeling for her, but he doesn't understand.

Honors: In his society, Equality had been taught not to love but to think of women as evil. He has never been able to know what joy of habing a woman is. Since he entered the forest with Liberty he knows what it is like to be able to feel love from a women or passion. He knows that it is not evil and the Council yet again lied to him. He believes that it is better to be an individual than a group of people. I agree with Equality because being your own person is much easier and relaxing, and everyone should be able to express their own personalities.

  26. 1. Equality says the bond is joy. The bond is joy because they both want to be together and free. Also, Liberty loves Equality so much she was willing to brake the rules and leave her home from him. She took a big risk doing that but she followed her heart just like Equality.

    2. Equality is trying to find love. He was told that you were to put your brothers first. He also thinks that your not suppose to be alone because it's evil. Equaity enjoys being by himslef though.

Honors: Equality believes that joy comes from being with his brothers all the time. Working and living together with them are suppose to be bring happiness. He soon figures out that being alone is ok. I agree with him becuase you should be yourself all the time and being alone isn't bad it's just a preference.

  27. 1) Equality states that the feeling or bond, is pure joy. They are both joyful because they finally can be together at last. Liberty tells equality she wants to be damned together because she knows they really aren't. They are in their own personal heaven together. They don't have to obey anyone anymore, they are finally free, together.
    2) equality is learning a different way of love. He was taught before that being alone is "evil" but he much rather prefers to be alone. He finds it peaceful. He is forming a new way of love and is independent. This is something he could never do before.
Honors: equality has always been different. He wasn't allowed to love women, but love all his brothers the
same. He couldn't be individual. He was inferred to as "we". Everyone had to be the same. Equality doesn't like obeying these demanding rules. He is his own person, independent and bold. Filled with intelligence and personality. I agree with what he has done. For being YOURself is what life's about. It's about making your own mistakes and learn from one another. If we were alll the same, life would be pointless and boring, like what the council is doing to the society.

  28. 1. Equality states that he and Liberty share a bond. This bond is joy (Page 82). This joy comes from the freedom they both have from the council and their laws. In the Uncharted Forest, Equality and Liberty can choose to do whatever they wish to do. This bond will bring happiness and a hopeful future for Liberty and Equality.
    2. I believe Equality is trying to find the error of love. In his society, men and women didn't have or know of loving relationships as we have in our society. Equality feels these loving emotions for Liberty, but can't understand what they are. Equality has already shown compassion and love with Liberty when they kissed in the forest. If Equality can find the error of this love, it could bring him and Liberty a future together.
Honors: Equality was taught to believe that thinking of one alone is selfish and evil. He thought joy came from working and helping his other brothers and the society. After leaving the society, Equality has found what real joy is. Joy is comes from choosing for yourself, having independence, and choosing who and what you want in your life. I agree with Equality's thoughts. Without thinking of yourself, how can you know what your true joy and happiness in life really is.

    ReplyDelete
  29. 1.) Equality says that Liberty and he share a bond. This bond is more know as joy Page 82. I believe they are finally joyful because they can be free together at last. No one has the power to tell them otherwise. In the forest they have their options. They can do whatever they want whenever they want to, and as for there future i think they'll go far.

2.) Equality's error is trying to find love. In the society they lived in men and women were not supposed to have feelings for each other. When they need to have children, the guy/girl they are having the baby with is chosen for them. Equality thought is an exception, he has real actual feelings for Liberty, he just doesn't know really how to explain them yet. If Equality knows where to find this error in his heart him and Liberty could have a great future.

    Honors:
Equality thought that joy should come from working in the society, from working with his brothers. He was also taught in a selfish and almost crazy and evil way. Once he left he figured that real joy comes from within. You get to chose when your happy, sad, or even depressed. Without knowledge of how you feel yourself, how would you have anything in common with joy or happiness?

    ReplyDelete
  30. HONORS: Equality is taought that when you work on something alone it is atomatically evil. Anything that is thought to be good had to come from a group of people. also you was not allowed to show joy in anything that you done or somebody else did. Now he believes that the council has there evil ways and that he is doing the good thing. And joy can come from anything and you can show it in your emotions.

    ReplyDelete
  31. 1. Equality says that the bond is joy. He is realizing that man and woman are meant to be together and they are happy when they are.
2.The error is love. I believe so because as soon as he says that the Golden One says "I love you" and that is just kind of hinting that the error is love.
Honors: Equality has been taught all his life that anything that has to do with only one person is evil. That's one of the reasons that the council would not except his invention because it was only him who created it. He was also taught that joy came from working, and having everything in order, and being told what to do. He is slowly learning that that is not the joyful life and fending for yourself is real joy.

  32. 1. Equality says that the bond between him and Liberty is joy. I think that he is realizing he loves her, because he kissed her in the woods. (Page 83) Showing such great affection towards in the society he used to live in would be considered a horrible crime. Equality and Liberty are planning on building a house together, and starting new lives with each other. Equality was almost considering himself damned, but now he has somebody to live with, and he won’t be alone.

    2. The error that Equality is thinking of is in love. Growing up, Equality was taught never to love somebody above any other person, because it was a sin. Nobody was allowed to be themselves, and making up your mind and showing preference to someone was a personal thought. Equality knows that there is something about Liberty that makes her stand out to him. Now that they are alone together, and will be forever, he can finally love someone without fear of the council.

Honors- As Equality went through life, he was raised to believe that thinking for yourself, being alone, and being selfish are evil thoughts. The council tried to drill this in to the mind of every citizen in the society, so that they could be controlled without fear of being questioned. Now Equality’s thoughts are the complete opposite. He doesn’t care what the council thinks. He wants to discover things, and work with the scholars, even though he was assigned as a street sweeper. I agree with Equality’s new thoughts, because I wouldn’t want to be controlled by a society like the one he was in.

  33. Prompt #1: Equality states that “Joy” is the bond between him and the Golden One (pg. 83). Anthem states, “Our dearest one. Fear nothing of the forest. There is no danger in solitude. We have no need for our brothers. Let us forget their good and our evil, let us forget all things save that we are together and that there is joy as a bond between us.” (pg. 83) Equality also mentions that he has been alive for twenty one years and they have never known that joy was possible to men. After he kissed the Golden One, he knows that joy is possible and how it feels like. Now, since they reunited, The Unconquered and The Golden One in peace and in love.

Prompt #2: “There is some error, one frightful error, in the thinking of men.” That one error is love. Love is one of the things the council wouldn’t allow men to do. They could only love for the men in their society and no one else. Liberty is also having an error, too. Her error is trying to say “I love you” (pg. 86- 87), but “I” is not allowed. Equality and Liberty are both having trouble but their trying, trying to be their own mankind.

Honors Prompt: Equality was taught that all men are equal, “We are one in all and all in one,” (pg. 19) They were also taught it is bad to be smarter than your own brothers, nothing is greater than the great “We”, and that solitude is evil. There were so many rules in Equality’s society, the list never ends. Equality now believes that there is something greater than the greater “We”, and also that man can have emotions such as love, and sadness. Yes, I love/ agree with Equality’s thoughts because he is free and I would hate not to be able to be my own person.

  34. 1. On page 83, Equality says that the bond he shares with the Golden One is joy. They are both happy because they are together once again. At first Equality thought that he would have to give her up once he left the society, but now he is filled woth happiness now that they are together again.

    2. The error that Equality is referring to is that he knows that only he himself loves Equality but he can't put it into words. Hes missing the word I but he cant seem to know how to figure it out.

    Honors:
In the society Equality was taught that there was no happiness and all the brothers were to act the same. You could not be different or have your own indivuality. Also all men and women were considered brothers and sister. Equality's beliefs now are totally different because he feels joy with Liberty, hes shown that he has a different personality that his brothers and he and Liberty have declared they don't feel like they are brothers and sisters but as more. I agree with his prgession of thought because he has finally become his own person and he doesn't need the Society the way he though he did.

  35. Equality feels a bond between him and Liberty – joy (pg. 82). They obviously have a special connection together and care about each other. Their love is growing, and is proven when they finally share a kiss. Liberty attempts to explain her feelings for him but cannot find the words to say. The rest of the society do not have feelings like these, therefore Equality and Liberty do not know how to respond to the feelings they are having. Although they are alone in the Uncharted Forest, their bond together will bring them both more happiness than the society ever could.
Equality thinks of an error in man, I believe that error to be love. Love is something that is rarely talked about in the society, so he does not know much about it. Love, in some ways, has to do with individuality. You have to make your own mind up about someone, and come up with your own opinions of them. Equality has his thoughts of Liberty and she has them for him, but neither knows exactly what they mean. With love, comes choices, and choices is the broader error that man has.
The thought of doing something by yourself and not with your brothers is considered evil. Equality questioned that, though, and now thinks that individual thinking and doing is not evil at all. He finds joy in being an individual and being able to think on his own. While working in the tunnel and staying in the Uncharted Forest with the Golden One, he has realized that there is more to life than always working as a whole. That is what brought him to his ways and new opinions of the world and society.

  36. 1. The bond between Equality and Liberty is joy (p. 82). I think that part of their joy is from being in love. It could also come from finally being free, and away from the Council's prying eyes. Even though they are lost in the Uncharted Forest, they are together, which is all that they need.

    2. Equality's error is love. Since no one else knows love in his old society, he's really not sure how to handle it. This also goes along with the aspect of freedom. Equality isn't sure how to handle both caring for Liberty and moving on with his discoveries. It is causing internal difficulties for him.

Honors: I agree with what Equality says about his old society. He used to be reprimanded for having different thoughts than his brothers. Now, he is able to put all of his unique thoughts to use. Equality realizes that there are better things than his old society, a thought that no one else would have. He is also realizing that out in the forest with Liberty is where he wants to stay.

  37. 1. Equality believes the bond between him and Liberty is "joy."(pg.83) The joy is that they are both free and in love. It is now clearer that Liberty is in love with him, because she followed him into the Uncharted Forest. Now the two want a house in the woods.(pg.84-85) Earlier on I knew these two were perfect together.

    2. In contrast to the following quote, I believe Equality is talking about love. He is probably never heard the word before, and is confused on what kind of relationship he is in. The statement also comes after he is reviewing the time he has spent with Liberty. The next thing the Golden One says is, " We love you."(pg.86) She then happens to be sort of confused while talking. I think she is looking for the word "I."

Honors: Equality has found that the bond between him and Liberty is "joy." The joy they share is real joy, not the joy the Society thinks of. It's almost like what his new life is like was not even imaginable in the Society. He knows that he has found love and life is better. Imagine living in his old Society and then coming to a clean and perfect new world. This is exactly what Equality is thinking.

  38. 1.In this chapter Equality says the bond between him and the Golden One is joy. I think he says this because they are finally together. they are in the Uncharted Forest by themselves with no Council telling them how to live their life. They can be their own person and they are finally content.
    2. I believe the error Equality speaks of is love. He doesn't understand why the council made it seem so horrible. Now that he is experiencing it, he feels that it is wonderful. He wishes he could have always felt this greatness, but the Council has forbidden it until this point.
Honors: As Equality begins to move forward with his life he begins to wonder if what he had previously learned in the society was correct. He learns love is not actually evil it actually brings joy to him. He sees that being your own person is not terrible like he had been taught. Being in the forest and realizing he no longer has restrictions makes him realize how much he likes his life now opposed to when he was in the Society.

  39. Chapter 9

1.) Equality states that joy is what binds them together. (pg.83) Earlier in the book, Equality is dismayed by the fact that he may never see The Golden One again, but is then overjoyed when he discovers her in the dark forest. (pg.77,81) After Equality explains to Liberty that a promising future is before them, he revels in his newfound company. Equality is experiencing the emotion of love freely and without hesitation; an action he would have never been able to make in the society. When Equality states that joy is what binds them together, he is referring to love and the joy they feel in each other’s presence.

2.) I believe man’s error in the society in which the anthem is man’s becoming exceedingly comfortable in their current situation. The society stifles innovation and creative though in a large part because they believe they can advance no further and are content how they are. Equality is the first to break away from this kind of thinking and look for something more in the world. If man had never pursued bigger and better things, we would still be living in hunting and gathering societies; not the complex cultures and societies we live in today. One should never become too comfortable in their abilities also, because it leads to over confidence, which leads to mistakes. The society’s ideals that are instilled into mankind essentially set the world up for failure.

Honors: In the beginning of the novel, Equality believed that to be alone was misery and joy could only be found alongside his fellow brothers. Since his birth Equality was different from everyone else, but in the beginning of the novel he felt as though his differences were a curse and tried to suppress them. Catalectic events throughout the plot however warp Equality into a mindset of individualism and acceptance of his differences. Events such as Equality falling in love with Liberty and the Council of Scholars’ rejection of his discovery; drive Equality away from the ideas instilled in him, and move him towards more individualistic thinking. I am personally happy with Equality’s progression of thought. In the beginning I saw him as weak for conforming to the society, but now I see him as strong for rebelling against it. Ayn Rand’s description of this change of mindset allowed me to feel closer to Equality and understand his thinking and feelings.

  40. 1. Equality says "That there is joy as a bond between us."(pg.83) Before Liberty came he was feeling pain for the fact that he would never see her again. He is also shocked by the fact that she followed him. But he is overjoyed to see her, and after that he takes her in his arms and kisses her. He says to liberty "Our dearest one. Fear nothing of the forest. There is no danger in solitude."(pg.83)
    2. I think when he says “There is some error, one frightful error." he is referring to love.(pg.86) Equality is confused because in the Society he was taught to treat all the same and look at all the same. Yet he wishes for Liberty. He sees her in a different light, in a different way. He realizes that he loves her and that she loves him.
Honors. Equality has been taught that anything done by one is evil. But he realizes that "There is no danger in solitude."(pg.83) He originally wished to be the same as his brothers, yet he came to think "We have no need of our brothers."(pg.83) When the House of the Scholars rejected Equality's ideas that ended up driving him to think more about himself than his brothers. When this occurred I became over joyed at the fact that Equality was becoming more unique.

  41. Equality calls the bond between himself and Liberty “Joy”. I think the real word would be love though. I feel like he’s falling in love with her but he’s never had these feelings before so he doesn’t know how to express them. He’s confused about his feelings for her but he likes them.
I think the error is love. It’s not something that the Consul wanted anyone to feel but they still do. It’s human nature to want to be loved or to love someone else. It can make you weak, happy, or sad.
Honors: I agree with the thoughts of Equality now. He was forced to see things as planned out for him with no freedom and nothing gave you joy. Everything that your brothers didn’t do or think about was evil and that’s not true. It’s okay to be your own person and to have an opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  42. 1) Equality says that "Joy" is the bond between he and the Golden One. Joy is the two of them being free from the society and the councils laws. They are able to do whatever they want and that is joy to Equality.
2)Love is the error that Equality is looking for. Love is something he is begining to feels for the Golden One. He was always taught that to love someone is to have some sort of personal feelings and that isn't allowed. Equality doesn't understand why his feelings towards the Golden One are viewed as so bad.
Honors: Equality was always told that to love was evil and after the council rejected his invention he ran to the forest and found something, he found himself. Now that he is free from that society he is free to love.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Throught Equalitys life he was always taught that love was evil, but as he has left and matured he has come to realize it is not a bad thing at all. Finding Liberity found himself and who he truly is. He has found a person who can except him and his beliefs for what they are. The Councul did not show him that they rejected him and did not give him the chance Liberty did.

    ReplyDelete
  44. 1. Equality says that “Joy” is the bond between Liberty and himself. Now knowing that their love is not forbidden any longer brings both of them great joy. They are happy they can spend the rest of their lives together without fear of being torn apart because the laws. They can go anywhere, do anything together, they can make their own decisions. Also they will now never feel alone because they have each other, which really seem all they want.
    2. I believe the error Equality is referring to is love. I don’t believe he knows how to love yet. His society says that loving any one person more than your brothers is evil (p.41). He is committing a crime for showing preference toward Liberty. Equality has broken many rules to be with Liberty; to me that show that he will do anything for her and that he truly is in love with her.
    Honors:
When Equality lived in the city and was controlled by the Council he was made to think that joy should come out of working and working together with your brothers. He believed that being alone was evil and that in order to be good you must obey all rules that were set to follow. Equality now thinks that being alone is not evil and real joy is doing what you love. He wanted to be a Scholar and so he decided to go against the rules in order to prove the Council wrong and show he was good enough to be a Scholar. Now he also thinks that joy is being with someone you care about, he is genuinely happy when he is with Liberty.

  45. 1. Equality tells Liberty that their bonded by the Joy they share. Knowing that they can love each other without restraints and the Councils.Facing the future together and leaving their past behind." Give us your hand. Look ahead. It is our own world, Golden One, a strange unknown world, but our own"(p. 84).

2.Pride. I think he is talking about the pride one has about something." And both these joys belong to us alone, they come from us alone"(p.86). The Councils have always taught not to think just of yourself but of everybody. To claim these as his personally is a crime. Equality went through so much to show his invention to the Councils only to be denied.

HONORS: They society has taught him not to think of just yourself but to look at the bigger picture. To do so is a crime and the Council wants you to be in the dark on everything. The Councils rules gave him no freedom or joy. Once he got into the Uncharted forest he felt nothing but freedom from eating food to looking at his reflection for the first time. The place that was "damned" is the exact place where he found his freedom.
