Chapter Five

Respond to the questions below.
1- What does Equality invent in this chapter?

2- Equality is suddenly interested in seeing his own image. Why now? What emotions is he feeling?

Honors' Discussion Prompt
Equality understands that his invention will benefit mankind greatly; however, this was not his main motivation for his experiments. What is the primary source of his “great joy”? How will his invent truly benefit mankind?

  1. 1. Equality invents the lightbulb in this chapter. By harnessing the strength of the electricity, Equality was able to construct a lightbulb. He seems to be excited with his discovery, and he wanted to reveal his invention to the rest of the world(p.60). The advancement that Eqaulity has made will hopefully be accepted by the World Council, for it is an important invewntion and should not be left unattended. I am interested to see what the outcome will be.
    2. I think Eqaulity is feeling realization. He was unaware of his strength, yet he uses it everyday(p.61). Equality is now curious about what he looks like and what his surroundings resemble(p.61). Equality does not want to be un-noticed, so he begins to go against the ethical codes(p.62). I infer he will be hunted for breaking the laws.
Honors: Eqaulity most likely thought this would give him fame and fortune. Equality is tired of being a street sweeper, so he decided that this would be his "big break"(p.60). He wants to be in the Home of the Scholars and revealing the lightbulb to the World Council was his best chance of getting rewarded. Equality is not being rational, for he thinks the council will give him what he desires(p.61). Equality is also attempting to hide his invention, yet he seems to be someone who cannot keep a secret(p.61)

    1. I would have never thought about the fame and fortune thing because I didn't think the had curency. That's why I think your answer is creative.

      Delete
    2. I agree that the lightbulb could give him alot of recognition, but I don't think that he would have fortune because everyone is supposed to be equal so they wouldn't have rich and poor people.

    3. Your idea on Equality 7-2521 creating the light bulb for fame and fortune is very creative. It is very possible that he wanted to show his invention for fame but I believe that he only wanted to show his invention to help his brothers and to gain his own self-knowledge.

    4. I like how you said that Equality may have created the lightbulb for fame and fortune.

      Delete
    5. I agree that it will be very interesting to see how the unveiling of the lightbulb turns out. I have to wonder if it will hurt him instead of helping him. I think that the council might believe that it is witchcraft and evil, so Equality will be banished.

  2. #1) In this chapter Equality invents a light bulb. He invented it from a glass box he found in the tunnel. When he puts his wires to the box and closed the current the wire glowed making the light work. Equality was thrilled with his invention and wanted to show the world council. He hopes that the discovery will outweigh his transgressions and he will be forgiven. (Pg.60)
#2) Equality is suddenly interested in seeing his reflection because he is discovering his emotions. He has discovered curiosity. Men in his society never see their own faces or ask their brothers about it. They had been told that it is evil to have concern for their own faces and bodies. (Pg.62) He has been slowly uncovering his emotions and the next step was curiosity.
Honors: His motivation or “great joy” was in proving the scholars wrong. It was in proving that they scholars weren’t always right about everything. As well as in proving that all had not been discovered yet. His actions will not go over well with the council. When what he has been doing is discovered he will probably be put in jail.

    3. I think that Equality will be punished, too.

    4. I think that Equality should kind of see that he is going to be punished.

  3. 1) The light bulb was invented by Equality in this chapter. He had found an old glass box and some wires probably left behind from the people that lived in the Unmentionable Times. He creates the bulb by connecting the wires to the box and then closing the circuit somehow. Equality realized he has discovered something new and he wants to take it to the World Council of Scholars. He is hoping the new discovery will help the society and all of his crimes will be forgotten about. He also wishes he shall be switched to living in the House of Scholars. (page 60)

    2) Equality has finally discovered some emotion other than fear. He is suddenly interested in this because he is finally understanding the individuality of himself. He realizes that everyone should be able to do what they want. Another emotion he feels is curiosity. He wants to see what he looks like because he never has before. Equality is finally realizing the meaning of 'I' without even knowing the word exists.

    Honors:
Equality's great joy comes from him being able to do something on his own without people telling him what to so. He has finally done something he likes and he is very proud of himself. I think the main emotion he felt was pride. Another part of Equality's mind is thinking he actually proved the Council wrong. He is finally going to be able to stand up to them and possibly make a difference in his society.

    4. I agree with you that Equality desires to make a difference in the world through making discoveries.

  4. 1.Equility inventss the light box which represents in modern times a light bulb. He made this box out of old wires and glass that was most likely left behind from the unmentionable times.since he discovered how this works he wants to present this idea to the world council that will be visiting where he lives(60). He wants to change the whole world with his idea , if it is accepted.

2.I belive the reason why he suddenly cares about what his body looks like is because since he made the light discovery he wants to make another about himself this time(61).I think that he feels like since he has now broke such a big rule about inventing then why stop there. All he is curious he was curious about inventing and light and now about his appearance.

Honors:I think that since Equality never really reached his full potential in school that and at his work thats why he wanted to do something that would.Since he was declared street sweeper he has wanted nothing more than to be in the house of scholars and this is his shot at getting in. He wants to get that pat on the back for succeceding and be offered to join.He also knows that he can light many cities with this one light box and always have a constant light(61).the only thing is that the idea needs to be accepted first.

    1. I agree with you that Equality never reached his full potential in school. He was too busy trying to be like everyone else to do all that he could.

    2. I have to agree wih you when you said that the reason he was curious about himself is due to the fact that he wanted to make another discovery. That was a great use of inferring.

    3. I agree with KKapl. I never thought of him creating another discovery.

  5. 1. Equality 7-2521 has made a light bulb (pg. 59). It is described by Equality 7-2521 that he discovered how to control the powers of the sky and bend them to men’s will. He does not know the true power of what he holds or what he has done. Equality 7-2521 knows that this discovery will be able to help his brothers for they won’t have to use fire to get light but he can’t see what other great discoveries he could lead the world to find. He wants to share his new invention to rest of his brothers (pg. 60) but with the way his society is I do not think they will accept it as Equality 7-2521 hopes they will.
    2. Equality 7-2521 is interested in knowing what he looks like because of the newfound courage he has with his invention of the light bulb. He describes the light bulb as being an extension of himself, his own veins (pg. 61). He is feeling a large range of emotions. First would be curiosity for something that he has never known or been able to see. If I were in his place I would also feel terror at the thought of the Council ever discovered my curiosity of what I looked like. I would never want to face the punishment for committing that sin (pg. 62). He could also feel a realization for finally knowing something that he would never have thought or noticed before pg. 61), even if it involves going against his worlds laws.

Honors: The main reason that he started this experiment was just for the sake of learning. He is showing Rand’s main focus and ideals of Objectivism by using his studies only for self-gain. Equality 7-2521 didn’t care if his brothers would have ever discovered about his experiments except for the idea that he would be punished. It was only after he realized how the light bulb could help his brothers was when he wanted them to know. He was also trying to one-up his brothers and show them that he DESERVES to be with the Scholars rather than the Street Sweepers. His invention really would help his society advance into the technologies we have in our time if the Council would listen.

    3. Equality does want more knowledge, and I like the way you stated it in your passages.

  6. 1. In chapter 5, Equality invents the lightbulb. Down inside of his hole, he found some materials left over from the Unmentionable Times. Using these materials, he created an electrical circuit. Whenever he closed the circuit, the wires glowed. He believes that this invention will pardon all of his "sins".

    2. In chapter 5, Equality suddenly becomes interested in seeing his own image. He feels curious, because he has never seen himself before. This correlates with his quest for knowledge. It is also possible that he feels bitterness. The Council has kept him from all of the things that he could potentially learn, and now his life is changing.

    Honors:
The invention that Equality has made will benefit mankind in many ways, and he is aware of this. However, this was not the only reason he created what he did. His "great joy" was a mix of discovery, triumph, and the ability to do something that no other had done. This "great joy" was his true motivation throughout his work. It helped him to be diligent and careful.

  7. In this chapter Equality discovers electricity and how to make light. They mske it with their own two hands and no one else's. When they see what they have made, a lot of emotions come into their head and they don't understand them at all. One of they things Equality feels is the erge to see his own face. Never are the people of the society allowed to look at themselves because self interest in seen as evil. Another feeling that Equality feels is them being proud of what they have made. they are glad they could make something to help their society.

honors: When Equality invents the light, they were not intending to help their society. they truely just wanted to learn and know things others didn't. His primary source for his "great joy" is because of how he now thinks he will we allowed to join the house of scholars. Also because of what he made. Equalitys invention, if approved, will help mankind with everything they do. It will help them see when it is dark, cook without a fire, and build many things they aren't ale to now. Equailtys invention would help mankind greatly.

  8. 1)He invented a lightbulb. He made it from a box of glass from the Unmentionable Times(p.59). When Equality builds this he is over come with happiness, sadness, and fear.He is sad because what he did was against ther laws(p.59). He is happy because he believes that the device he made will help the city be brighter(p.60). He has fear because he doesn't want anyone to find it and destroy it before he can show it to the Council of Scholars.
2)In my opinion I think he starts thinking about his own appearence ever since he called Liberty beautiful. Another reason that he is curious is because he has never thought about it before.Equality reminds me of Adam and Eve after they ate the apple and put clothes on when they saw they were naked. To me the 'apple' is the tunnel and the 'clothes' is the new knowledge he is finding. When Equality starts thinking about his appearence the emotion he starts to feel is pride. He is experiencing pride because the chapter starts with him being happy with his own achievement(p.60) and then he talks about his strong arms(p.61).
Honors: Equality's joy is coming from self achievement. He loved the Science of Things(p.23) and discovering something having to do with science, the lightbulb, is an acomplishment for him. His invention will benifit mankind by creating a domino effect. It would cause the people in society to think and to have a individual opinion about a new invention come into their society. I believe it would cause a big arguement.

  10. #1) Equality invents the lightbulb in this chapter(p. 59). He built on his discovery of electricity to use a closed current. This in a glass box became the lightbulb. Of course, they did not name the invention but the reader can infer that the object is a lightbulb. The invention of the lightbulb made Equality ecstatic because he believes that he has invented something that the Scholars have not.

  11. 1: In this chapter Equality invents a lightbulb. It says, "We had touched no flint, made no fire. Yet here was light, light that came from nowhere, light from the heart of metal." (pg. 59) Equality was confused about what he had invented, but he knew that it would benefit the society greatly. It also says, "We stretched our hands to the wire, and we saw our fingers in the red glow." Equality had found electricity and had invented the lightbulb.
2: Equality has been his whole life without seeing his own image. Not only without it, but without processing it. The society says it is evil to be concerned about their own body or faces. (pg. 62) Equality is beginning to feel a state of individuality. He is thinking of himself as one and not a whole. Equality knows that he is alone and he wants to know who this man is.
Honors: Equality's invention of electricity will benefit mankind greatly. It will give them light, air, heat, and more. What Equality sees is his opportunity to show the society. He knows he should show them but he says, " This has never been done before, but neither has a gift such as ours ever been offered to men." (pg. 61) Equality knows if they happen to find his invention they will not understand, and they will destroy it. The real way it will benefit mankind is the Council could understand that they were wrong about everything already being discovered.

    1. Honors: I like your prediction about the council being wrong about how the discoveries were being handled.

      Delete
    2. I think that equality was right to go against all odds and try to show his invention to the council. If they woul have accepted it, it would have made all of mankind easier. It still could maybe.

      Delete
    3. I don't think that Equality was confused with his invention. I think he was awestruck and amazed, but not confused.

      Delete
  12. #2) After inventing the lightbulb Equality feels the need to see his image (p. 61). He is confident because he feels that he is important. He feels that he has a mission to serve humanity. Equality doesn't even know why he has the urge to see what he looks like. Perhaps he is thinking that many will soon look upon him in pride or thanks for his invention. Equality knows he has been told that to know or care of ones image is "evil" so maybe he feels a tad conflicted or confused, too (p. 62).

    1. I never thought about his invention having anything to do with him wanting to see his reflection, but you made some good points about it.

  13. 1) In this chapter Equality creates a typr of lightbulb. The lightbulb that he creates is made of glass, is in the shape of a box, and puts off a dim light. Equality creates the lightbulb by improving upon his creation of electricity. Equality believes that his invention can greatly help mankind. Even more importantly, Equality believes that he has created something alone that the council of scholars couldn't have together.
2)Equality is suddelny interested in seeing his own image in chapter five. Because he has just created the lightbulb, he is starting to think of himself differently. He starts to question all of the things that the council says not to question. Because he is starting to think of himself as an individual he is starting to care more about himself and his creation. This is a great step in the direction for him to break away from the society and become an individual.
Honors:Equality knows that the invention of the light bulb could greatly benefit mankind. Equality could greatly help mankind by producing light with his light bulb and further studying electricity and make it easier to live everyday life. However, his main motivation for his experiments is his lust for knowledge. Equality has always dreamed of becoming a scholar and discovering the great mysteries of the world. He sees his invention as a way to convince the council to let him become apart if them and as a way to be forgiven of his crimes.

    1. I agree that Equality has a drive to obtain knowledge and that is one of his motives behind his invention.

    2. I like how you mentioned that Equality created the lightbulb on his own instead of with others, it reminds me that he is very intelligent and more advanced than the people in his society.

  14. Honors: Equality knows he has conquered a great fete. He is proud of himself, happy to serve his fellow man, and hoping for a chance to rise in the social ladder. He sees the potential easiness his invention could bring to humanity. Equality knows these lights are much easier and more powerful than the candles they are using in the present (p. 60). He is using egoism because he has selfish alterior motives. "Our discovery is too great for us to waste our time in sweeping the streets."(p. 60), is how Equality is thinking. This statement suggests that he believes this is his big break. He now thinks he is better than a street sweeper. That's why he feels happiness because he feels he is better than others.

  15. 1. Equality 7-2521 invents a way to control electricity. His invention is glass box made of materials from the unmentionable times. (Pg.59) He created an electric circuit which made a bright glow. This was a powerful invention. He harnessed the power of the sky.

    2. Equality 7-2521 is now interested in his own image because he sees his invention as part of himself. The wires are his veins(Pg.61). That is the first time he has thought of himself. People in that society never see themselves or ask about themselves. He disobeys for the sake of his invention.

Honors: Equality 7-2521 wants to show his invention to the scholars and work with them. He also wants to become an individual. However it is against the law. No one knows what it's like to be an individual, Equality 7-2521's invention will achieve this. His invention will help the society by its functional properties and by creating individuals. People becoming individuals will benefit the society the most.

  16. 1. In this chapter, Equality invents the lightbulb. He was ablt to construct the lightbulb by having a complete understandment of electricity (page 59). After inventing the lightbulb, Equality believes he should show the World Council his accomplishment. Equality wishes that after he shows the men the lightbulb that we would be accepted into the council. This seems to sound to easy, and makes readers suspect that this invention will be rejected by the World Council.

    2. Equality has the urge to see his own image. This action is showing he is overcoming his fears. He has no fears, giving him more curiousity. With being curious, Equality wants to see and learn of everything, including his image. Equality is wanting to find himself, and this new emotion could lead to this happening.

Honor's: Equality is overcome with excitement of his invention. His great joy comes from him thinking that he's smarter than the scholars. In Equality's view, this invention could bring him to being awhat in our time we would call "famous". This invention could also help mankind have a dependent source of lighting. It could even lead them into a progress in technology, which is what the society needs in order to become more advanced.

  17. 1.Equality invents the lightbulb which is something that is outstanding a should revolutionize their society. The only thing standing in the way is the council who doesn't like change or mysterys they don't know the answer too. This will make it hard for it to be accepted and it shows how much more Equality is different.
    2. Equality wants answers to his problems. This is why is feels all this emotion. He wants to know and see what makes him feel this way when everyone is doesn't even give a thought about it. He is stronger, smarter, and much taller and he wants to see this. All he wants is answers.
honors:Equality thought that this would change his life. He wants the people to see that he is different and doesn't deserve to be a street sweeper with his wisdom. This invention gives him the confidence to realize this and try to change his life.

  18. 1. In this chapter, Equality invents a source of light. He has made a lightbulb. Equality made the lightbulb from a glass box he found in the tunnel, possibly left from the Unmentionable Times. He had connected wires to the glass box thus creating electric light. This invention/ discovery leads Equality to thinking about how everything could be if this light was used throughout the houses. He believes it would be beneficial, and that he should present it to the World Council of Scholars; as the Home of Scholars would not appreciate the finding, but rather punish him for working alone in secrecy.
    2. I believe that Equality is interested in seeing how he looks because he has discovered a lot in so little of time. Equality has discovered emotion and feelings. He has came into common curiosity and a subtle forbidden interest in women. Now that these emotions have flushed through his body, his intelligence is growing as his wonder increases. The thought has chimed in his brain, of what he may look like. In my opinion, I think Equality is discovering individuality, and what it is to be a whole, complete, person.
    Honors:
Equality's motivation, or "great joy", came from his thoughts that he would be proving the House of Scholars wrong. He believes that the World Council of Scholars will love his invention, and he will become of the Scholars. I personally feel that Equality is not being rational. I think that he is so ecstatic about his new invention, that he cannot imagine the possible disasters this could propose for him. If the Council approves of his invention, it will change the society for the better, as it will provide light for longer work hours, and lead to further beneficial discoveries.

  19. 1. Equality discovers a light bulb in this chapter. He makes it out of a glass box and wires that he found from earlier times. After he realized that he discovered something new he wanted to show the Council of Scholars. He hopes that this will out weigh all of his crimes he's comittted. He also hopes to live in the House of Scholars instead of being a street sweeper.
    2. Equality discovers the emotion of curiosity. The only emotion he's ever known is fear and he's interested in it. He has never seen himself before and wants to because he has a newfound courage in himself after discovering the light bulb. I think maybe he wants to know what his appearance is like since he thinks liberty is beautiful. He has more confidence in himself now.
Honors: Equality's "great joy" comes from him thinking he will prove the House of Scholars wrong. He thinks that doing this will bring him into the House of Scholars. He also thinks that he will be forgiven of his crimes and not get punished. I think that he's so excited about his discovery that he's not thinking straight. The House of Scholars will probably not forgive him, I think his punishment will be even worse. I'm anxious to find out what happens.

  20. 1- In this chapter, Equality invented the lightbulb. I believe that he thinks the lightbulb is going to bring him fame and that the council will love him for it and place him in the Home of Scholars. In all reality, I believe that the council will do the exact opposite. I think that they will love his invention, but they will act like they hate it, because they didn't invent it. Chances are, Equality may even be punished.

  21. In this chapter, Equality has started to want to see his own image. I believe that he wants to see himself now, because of the invention that he made and he realizes that he's smart. I think that he wants to see if he's as handsome as he is genius. The feelings that he has is curiosity. Curiosity can make you do stupid things, so it's hard to tell what lengths Equality will go to just to see his own self.

  22. By creating the lightbulb, Equality knows that it will greatly affect mankind. The primary source for his "great joy" comes from his sense of confidence. He believes that because of his invention, he will be honored by the council and he will receive great fortune and fame. His invention will truly benefit mankind by helping them to do things that they could never do before, such as cook, see when it's dark, and light up the community. I think that Equality doesn't fully know what his invention will do for mankind.

  23. Equality creates the lightbulb. He thinks the lightbulb can get him a new life with the World Council. He also thinks the lightbulb could change things for the society. He wants to show the lightbulb to the world.(60) I think he will be successful but who knows with the council.

Equality now wants to see his own face. I think he wants to know because he is realizing that there is more to the world out there than what he knows.(61) He starts to go against the code.(62)The emotion he is feeling is curiosty. He wants to learn new things and its all coming at him in one moment.

Equality knows that his invention will affect all humans. His "great joy" comes from the fact that he knows he can prove to the Council that he is better than a streetsweeper and needs to be at a higher rank in the society.(60)He knows that he can get great fortune from his invention. His invention will help mankind in many ways. Used for seeing when its dark, have better lit rooms, and create heat.

  24. 1) Equality invents a light. His invention is similar to a lightbulb. It is in the shape of a box with a coil of wire in it that is said to glow and give out light. Equality is amazed by his invention because he didn't have to use flint or tinder. He wants to show his invention to the world and his society because he thinks it will benefit these things.

    2) Equality wants to know what he looks like. He is overcome by the feeling that his invention is a part of his body and he wants to know his own image. He believes there is a connection between his hands and the way he made his wire. He realizes and notices things about his body that he hasn't noticed before he made his discovery. Equality knows it is wrong to think about himself but he wants to anyways.

Honors) He has more than one benefit. Equality puts a lot of trust in his invention and what it could do. His "great joy" is that he thinks that if he presents this invention to the council they will accept him. He also has been longing to get accepted into the Scholars and be able to continue learning. The real benefit would be that he would be able to light cities with just wire and electricity.

  25. 1. Equality had invented a sort of light. It was close to a lightbulb, but realistically it was just a box with some wire inside. The reason Equality was so amazed was because he had never seen anything like that. It didn't require tender to light, or anything else like that. The reason he is so excited is because he wants to show the world what he found, because he believes he will be going placing, because they'll be so amazed.

    2. I believe Equality is interested in seeing his own image because hes finally starting to see his true colors. He's starting to know about his personality, the way he thinks, the reason he acts, and the emotion hes feeling right now if defiantly curiosity. Also I don't think it just struck him till then about what he looks like, because in their society there not supposed to tell one another what they look like(pg. 62). Also he believes the invention is apart of himself in a sense. Almost as though they are one, connected to an extent like how his body helped him make his invention.

Honors:Equality himself would get much more then just one benefit if his invention is successful. One would be the acceptance of the council, which he has wanted for a long time. Also he could get into the house of the scholars and he could continue getting his education. The benefit of his invention is that he could keep everything lit for a long time. Also it would create more light then their current source, and its also simple to hook up and make.

  26. 1. In this fifth chapter, Equality has invented the lightbulb. He worked for a long time experimenting without his discovery of electricity. Finally, Equality figured out how to construct a lightbulb. Immediately, he is ecstatic and can barely contain himself. He wants to share his incredible invetion with the Council. (pg. 60) Equality hopes to be accpeted as a legitimate inventor and placed into the Home of the Scholars to continue his research.
    2. Equality is now starting to realize what he's been missing out on. He is very intelligent and keeps on wanting to know more and more. The Council robbed him and everyone else of their own identities, and I suspect he is feeling confusion and frustration. Going through your entire life not even knowing your own physical features is devastating him. He is having a revelation that even the simplest things in life have been taken from him.
Honors: Equality wants to reveal his invention to bring him the closest thing to freedom he can obtain. By presenting the lightbulb to the World Council of Scholars, he expects to be removed from his position as a street sweeper and be promoted to the Home of the Scholars. (pg.61) Studying with other scholars would bring Equality the most happiness possible to a person in this society. However, the Council is harsh and will most likely punish him for his discretions rather than reward him for his miraculous invention. Equality 7-2521 is being optimistic, but maybe he should be more cautious and rational.

  27. 1.In chapter 5 Equality invents the lightbulb. He created in his secret underground tunnel with a glass box of stuff he finds from the Unmentionable Times. Equality beleives that his invention has given him the power of the skies when it's only just electricity. He decides that he must go to the Council in one month and present to them his great discovery.Equality hopes that the council members will accept him and let him move to the House of Scholars.

2.On page 61 Equality starts to wander what he looks like. This is because he is starting to feel emotions other than fear. He has probablly wondered what he looks like ever since he called Liberty beautiful.Equality beleives that his invention is part of him because his hands helped him make the invention. This made him curious as to what he looks like.

Honors: Equality's sole perpose for creating the light bulb was not to help out mankind, even though it greatly could. His "great joy" in this invention is that he thinks that the Council is going to love and accept his invention and he will be put into the House of Scholars. In his mind he thinks that the Council will not harm or punish him when in fact they probably will. Hewants to make the Council feel bad for placing him in the House of the Sweepers. When unfortunately none of this will ever happen.

  28. 1. In chapter 5, Equality invents the lightbulb. Created from supplies extracted from the Unmentionable Times, Equality believes that his invention has given him free reign and a clear shot to stardom. This made him curious as to what he looks like. Also, his driving will for success aroused the curiosity within himself because, the same body with one voice, one name, one mind, and one soul, just invented a break in modern society.

  29. 1. In this chapter, Equality invents the light bulb. He is awed by his invention.(page 59) He is so excited about his invention that he wants to present it at the World Council of Scholars meeting that comes to his city in one month.(page 60) He also says that if anyone but the scholars learn about his invention, he will be killed, and his invention will be destroyed.(page 61) He hopes that his invention will get him transferred into the House of Scholars.(page 61)

    2. Equality is suddenly concerned about his image because he wants to know what Liberty sees when she looks at him. He really likes Liberty, so he is starting to be self-conscious of how he looks. He starts to be curious because he has never asked anyone about how he looks because it is evil for him to have concern for his own body.(page 62) He might be thinking that since he invented a light bulb, why can't he invent a mirror? He also feels sadness because he doesn't feel like he could ever see his own face.(page 62)

    Honors:
The primary source of Equality's great joy comes from the thought that the Council will forgive him for all that he has done wrong. He thinks that after he is forgiven he will be accepted into the Home of the Scholars. He is very glad about this because he has always wanted to be a scholar.(page 61) He also gets some satisfaction because he invented the light bulb. His invention will truly benefit mankind because he thinks that he will get switched into the Home of the Scholars.

    3. I don't think that Equality has any idea what a mirror is so he has no idea that he could invent one. Other than that, I agree with your response to question 2 and I think that it makes a lot of sense that Liberty makes him worry about his own image.

  30. 1.) Equality Invents the lightbulb in chapter 5 out of spare parts. He is very proud of this invention, Equality feels like his new invention will help lead him to stardom and fame. He believes he could become rich from bring his lightbulb to public. He decides in later months to take it to the council. Equality hopes they will let him in the council of Scholors.
2.) Equality wants to see his reflection is because he has gained more self power and believes he has gained strength. He is just now realizing, I believe, that he is his own person, and her wants to exploit this knowledge. By seeing his own reflection though that would make him have more knowledge than the council and they would not like that at all.

  31. 1. In chapter 5 Equality invents the light bulb. He simply takes the glass box he had found in the tunnel and wires he had found from the Unmentionable Times. He connected the wire to the box and the closed of the circuit. He then discovers that he has created light. He is so anxious and wishes to show this to the Council. (page 60) He hopes they will overlook his past and he will be forgiven because of his great discovery.

    2. Suddenly Equality is interested in seeing his reflection. He is beginning to discover new emotions other then fear. He has discovered curiosity. I believe he wants to see himself because he has never been aloud because it was considered evil. (page 62) He was not even aloud to ask his brothers about his appearance.

Honors: Equality's invention of electrcity is much greater then he realizes. He did it only to discover something not already known and in hope that the council will find it beneficial and move him up in life. That is the reason it is his "great joy". This invention will help man kind in many ways. They will have an air system, light, heat, and many more things.

  32. 1. Equality has invented the light bulb (p. 59). He realizes the significance of creating such a thing the instant the wires glow- for glowing means energy, and energy contains potential for many advances. This invention of his was made from materials scattered about in the tunnel, including a glass box and wires. Equality discovered how to connect the parts in such a way as to enable electricity to emit forth. He knows that such an important new invention would be a milestone to their society, and as such desires to bestow it upon the Council.

    2. While thinking to himself about the strength of his arms, Equality recognizes a desire to see his own face (p. 62). Having been raised in an environment where the self is unheard of, he has gone against the grain in many ways. Since he has 'sinned' so many times before, he probably sees his sins as minor or inconsequential. So what harm could tacking another sin onto the pile of transgressions do? To view his face would be for him to recognize the concept of his own self for the first time- it would be a direct manifestation of his desire for uniqueness.

Honours: Though Equality lies to himself, saying he has done this for his brothers, he knows that he has done it for his own sense of self; if not completely, then mostly. He does not say it outright, but he wants the Scholars to appreciate him for his work- to be known as the Tamer of Lightning, the one who brought light to such dark cities. Electricity would make life so much easier for everyone, assisting them in travel and cooking and shelter. Equality knows his invention is a light touch on something incredible, and he knows even if he can't be realized for his work, it is vital to humanity that his work is not forgotten.

  34. Prompt #1: Equality 7- 2521 has invented the light bulb (pg. 59). He used remains from the Unmentionable Times, a box of glass, devised to give forth the power of the sky of greater strength than we had ever achieved before. Finally, he got to put his wires to this box, when he closed the current- the wire glowed. It came to life, it turned red, and a circle of light lay on the stone before Equality. He was so excited because he invented something no other peer from his city could.

Prompt #2: All of the sudden, Equality wants to see his own reflection. “Men never see their own faces and never ask their brothers about it, for it is evil to have concern for their own faces or bodies (pgs. 61- 62). Maybe he wants to his own reflection because he wasn’t allowed and since he’s breaking the rules anyways why can’t he see his own reflection. Also he probably wants to see what Liberty sees every day. What does she see in him that’s so beautiful? He just needs to know.

Honors: Equality is ready to show what he’s got. I have feeling the whole part of his invention is to be better than the Home of the Scholars. “We must bring it into the sight of men (pg. 60).” Equality is happy because of his invention, but also scared. What if the council doesn’t believe him? Maybe the council will kill for thinking that there is greater power than “WE”. Equality is ready to prove he isn’t wrong.

  35. 1. In this chapter, Equality invents a lightbulb. He makes the lightbulb out of a glass box he found inside the tunnel and gets some wire that was left from more than likely the Unmentionable Times.

    2. Equality is suddenly intrested in his looks because he develops emotions. He now cares what he looks like because he's starting to realize the individuality between him and the others.

Honors: His "great joy" is showing the scholars that he is just as smart as they are. They think that because he's a street sweeper that he isn't as intelligent as they are. His invention could change the whole society. It could lead to more inventions and other people (that aren't the scholars) coming up with ideas. So then the scholars wouldn't be looked at, as important.

  36. #1- Equality invented the lightbulb. He creates it with a glass box he discovered in the tunnel and with some type of wire. He was so ecstatic from doing this because he was the first among the people to do this.
#2-Equality starts to become more curious about how he looks because he is starting to develop more emotions other than fear. He is starting to develop independence in wanting to see himself. He can't ask anyone how he looks though. But, he starts to become sad because he cant see his face.
Honors- Equality is proud that he invented electricity and light. He is just as smart as the council and he loves it. He takes a stand and because of this, he makes everyones future much easier. He is another step closer to independence of doing what he wants and how he feels.

  37. 1. Equality's invention is the lightbulb. He created it with the items he found in the box from the Unmentionable times. He was very proud of himself so now he can show the World Council and he thinks the Council will forgive him.
2.I think that because Equality is breaking the rules so much, he doesn't care for them anymore. The feeling that Equality is feeling is rebellion. Even though he knows hes not supposed to know what he looks like, he wants to know anyways. I think he likes the fact that hes defying the council and not getting caught.
Honors- Even though his invention did give him great joy, that is not were it came from. I think the idea of finally becoming a Scholar and being something more than a Street Sweeper is making him happy. All he wanted was to learn and study and in the end, all of that paid off.

  38. 1. In this chapter, Equality invents the lightbulb. This marvelous invention draws Equality into complete wonder. He has always wanted to be a scholar, and he feels that if he presents his invention to the world council of scholars he will be accepted. (p.60) One of the main problems is that if he is found out, his invention will be destroyed and he will be punished with the most punishment possible. (p.61) While the invention of the lightbulb is a blessing to him, it could very easily turn into a curse.

    2. Equality has fallen in love with Liberty, and now he begins to wonder what she sees when she looks at him. Is he ugly, dirty, what does he appear to be to the one he cares for the most? He has never seen his face nor asked what he looks like because it is evil to do so. (p.61-62) This also limits independence because they do not even have a right to see their own image. The desire to see himself is another sign of his difference.

    Honors-
The primary source of Equalities "great joy" is to know that he has created something with his own hands against the will of the council. He has done something that no scholar ever dreamed of doing before. His desire to be a scholar drives him to succeed and impress the scholars. (p.61) Due to the stubborness of the council I am not sure if his invention will even make it to society. If it does however, then this could be the greatest turning point in the history that they are allowed to know.

  39. 1. In this chapter, Equality invents a simple lightbulb. He states that the light "came to life, it turned red, and a circle of light lay on the stone before us (p 59)." In his mind, which works differently than other citizens, this means acceptance and even praise from the council. Equality also thinks that his invention will give him forgiveness from anything he will say to the council in his presentation. He is not aware that his plan will soon backfire.

    2. Equality is moving out of the state of mind that the council wants him to be in. No other man wants to see their reflection. For Equality, it will be a way for him to connect with himself as an individual. According to the council, it is a sin to want to see your own reflection (p 62). It shows an awareness of individuality, which is not an aspect of this society.

Honors: A certain smugness comes along with this discovery. Equality is proud of his invention, but he also wants to show the Council of Scholars. In a way, he wants to show off his knowledge, which outweighs the knowledge of anyone in the council. Equality says that his great joy comes from this discovery, but subconsciously he wants praise. Obviously, this is another difference in him, because praise can show favoritism and differences in knowledge.

  40. Equality has spent a lot of time in his secret tunnel. While in the tunnel he discovers many things from the unmentionable time. He experiments with many of the things that he finds. While going through the things he had found, he finds an old light. He manages to get the light working again.

The people ruled by the council have never seen themselves. They have had no intention of doing so either. Suddenly though, Equality has has the sudden urge to know what he looks like. The reason that he wants to know what he looks like maybe is this; he's begun to see himself a one not a we and he wishes to know what makes him different. He is overcome with curiosity, of what he looks like.

  41. 1. Equality 7-2521 has invented, or rediscovered, electricity (pg. 59). In his tunnel that no one else knows about, he figured it out. He was very amazed, and discovering that made him want to hide his founding’s even more. While at the same time, he wanted to tell everybody. The invention of light and electricity could change the society forever.
    2. Equality is slowly learning more and more about the past and its technology. While learning all this, it makes him curious about himself as well (pgs. 61-62). Nobody in his time has ever wondered what they look compared to anyone else, and has never asked, but Equality is beginning to wonder about all of it. What does he look like? Will he ever find out? He may be disappointed about what he sees. Finding out what he looks like, could be another part of individuality, it may be considered as well.

Honors: Equality is tired of his job, and wants something more. He wants to be a scholar and believes this invention can get him there. Although, in our time it would, in his time it probably won’t. They don’t want to find the discoveries of the past and they want them hidden. If they learn about this and more it will be considered sin. Light would benefit the society greatly, but the people may not let it happen, and may not want for it happen. His invention could cause problems in the society.

The discovery of light will no doubt have a huge impact on society. This is not the reason for Equality wanting to rediscover the light. The reason that Equality discovered the light was he want to know how things work. He simply wanted to know things. The reason for Equality doing what he has done has been for knowledge

  43. Chapter Five

    1. Equality invents the light bulb in chapter five. (pg. 59) He uses a glass box paired with a lightning rod to harness electricity and power the current that produces light. (pg.59) Equality is extremely proud of their invention and their discovery of the light bulb gives them new found motivation to discover more. They believe there are no limits to what they can discover if they just ask. (pg. 60) Equality’s discovery of the light bulb is his first reward for all his efforts and studies.
    2. I believe Equality is experiencing his first thoughts of individualism. Equality is beginning to ponder thoughts of self. For the first time, Equality is curious of what they look like. (pg.61) I believe Equality’s sudden interest in self stems from his discovery of electricity. I believe that the discovery of the light bulb, acts as a catalyst for Equality to strive for other discoveries; such as a discovery of self. As the plot progresses, Equality is learning more and more about himself and coming to appreciate the person he is.
Honors: After Equality makes his discovery, he begins to ponder the different ways his new invention could benefit his brothers. (pg.60) They realize their new invention has the capability to light the cities of the world in ways inconceivable until now. Equality’s primary motivation in sharing his discovery does not lie in helping his brethren; but rather in the fact that his discovery may allow him acceptance into the House of Scholars. Equality believes that if he gives the gift of his discovery to the World Council of Scholars, they will forgive his sins, and accept him into their halls to study the world and make further discoveries. Equality’s motive to share his invention is yet another example of the thirst for knowledge that is characteristic to Equality throughout the novel.

  44. 1) In this chapter, Equality invents the use of electricity as a light. It isn’t technically a light bulb, because the invention is in a large glass box, but it is using wire and electricity to produce light. Equality is excited to show everybody his new discovery. (Page 60) He hopes that he can show his invention to the World Council when it comes to his city. With the fact that it is illegal to invent something by yourself, it will be difficult to present his idea without getting in trouble.

    2) I believe that Equality is finally realizing that not all citizens are equal. He used his strength every day, and never realized that not everybody was as strong as him. (Page 61) I think he also realizes that he is different when he is the only one questioning the system. Now that he knows he is stronger and taller than other citizens, Equality wants to know what he looks like. I think that for wanting to see himself, he will get in trouble.

Honors- I think that Equality knows that his invention is something that could change the entire way of life for all citizens of the society. He wants to be famous, and to be known for what he discovered. By being remembered, he can show that he isn’t a part of some society, but he is a singular being. By revealing his invention to the World Council, Equality thinks that he will be one of the best scholars in the world, and he will be accepted by everybody as more than a simple street sweeper. With the laws against individuality, Equality will have a hard time keeping his invention a secret until the perfect time to reveal it.

  46. 1. Earlier on, Equality discovered electricity, now he invents the lightbulb. He invents it using a box of glass, then he installed wires and when the current is closed, the wire glows!(pg.59) The light in the box impresses him and it makes him think about what his life could be like. In about a month the World Council of Scholars is coming to his city. With his display, Equality hopes to be assigned to the Home of the Scholars.

    2. All of sudden, Equality wants to know what he looks like. He is curious because he really has no clue what he looks like. This is because he created the lightbulb, which is a genius invention that can help the world.

Honors: It is hard to imagine life without the lightbulb and electricity. Equality invents the lightbulb, but also wants recognition for it. He wants the Scholars to know that he is smart, and he also wants to be a Scholar. I truly believe this is his "great joy." If accepted, his invention is a great benefit to mankind.

Equality built the light bulb from remains of the "Unmentionable Times."(pg.59) Equality says that "We shall be forgiven for anything we say tonight."(pg.59) Equality could not conceive, for he struck no flint or built a fire.
    2. Equality wishes to see his image when he realizes how strong he is. For men never see their faces.
Honors. Equality's "Great Joy" came from the scholars not knowing everything. He wishes to join the scholars. He is tired of being a street sweeper, he wishes to learn. Equality becomes very proud of himself, and exited about his invention. He knows it could make society far better, and decides he wants to present it to the Council.
    Honors:
Most of Equality's joy is coming from the fact that he created the lightbulb on his own. He created something by himself in a world where youre supposed to work as a team. I think this is a satisfying thought to Equality. His invention will not only make mankinds life easier, but show them that they can work alone as an individual, and be successful.

He may help mankind by lighting streets and homes, while also going against Council gain and showing the people that everyone has talents and is different.

  52. 1. In this chapter Equality discovers the light bulb (p.59). He found a glass box from the Unmentionable Times, which he used to help create a circuit. Equality’s emotions range from happiness to sadness. Equality is happy because he thinks that the city will benefit from the invention (p.60). He is sad and fearful because he broke the laws in order to create this circuit (p.59). He hopes to show it to the Council of Scholars before someone finds his invention and destroys it.
    2. Equality wishes to see himself because he has realized he is different and none of him and his brothers is truly alike. He is curious of himself and his surroundings (p.61). Men never see their own faces and never ask their brothers about it (p.61). In Equality’s society it is considered “evil” to be curious about ones self. I believe the government doesn’t want to the society to know that they truly aren’t alike because that would mean they were different and they were their own person not as one.
    Honors:
I believe Equality’s main motivation was to show that he was as capable to invent new useful things even though he wasn’t in the Council of Scholars. So he wanted to prove the World Council wrong about what they assigned his job to be. He thinks he is better than being a Street Sweeper, because his intelligence. When really the World Council assigns the jobs, as Council of Scholars to ones they believe will not try to break rules and find new intelligence. Although I don’t think Equality is thinking ahead and looking for reasonable reactions that the World Council will have because I believe that they will probably dispose of him to keep the knowledge from the others.

  53. 1. In this chapter equality discovers the lightbulb. He contained the light in a box. Equality knows that this will help and he wants to share his invention."Our discovery is too for us to waste our time in sweeping streets"(p.60). His emotions are mixed because he knows that the council will never accept his invention. Equality thinks that if he shows his discovery to the council that they will accept him and he can go to the Home of the scholars.

    2. After this discovery Equality knows for fact that there is no way that he and his brothers are alike. He is starting to care about his body and see himself in a new light. "Yes,we do care. For the first time do we care about our body"(p. 61). Equality is curious not only how he looks but how he looks to other people." HONORS: In my opinion his main motivation was acknowledgement. He wanted everybody to see that he could do more than just sweep streets.
